I always try and find a small durable map for walking around town. It must be durable, fit in a pocket and give enough detail to get me oriented. It broke down key areas--downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina & Emirates Living and Bur Dubai & Deira. It also locates key hotels, shopping malls, some museums and attractions. It also shows the metro line and stops--red and green lines and shared stops. An overall good product that stood up to 3 days of use.

Martha is bullied at school because of her clothes and introverted personality, but Scott is also new at this school, and feels sorry for Martha. Soon he, too, is being bullied by the other kids.

In ABOMINATION, the bad guys are a religious extremist group that encourages child abuse, dictates what its parishioners wear, and regulates how they behave. It is a condemning look at a religious faction in which the families do not have television, computers, or cell phones.

Twelve-year-old Martha is not allowed to have friends, and can never invite anyone to their house...they might learn of the actual Abomination that lives in the basement.

Her older sister, Mary, was expelled from the family at age 16 for bad behavior, and now sends an occasional post card to Martha, which is promptly torn up by their father, and then retrieved and saved by Martha. Though Martha is required to feed and care for the Abomination, the identity of this creature is not revealed until near the end of the book.

When Martha realizes what has actually happened with her sister, she and Scott decide to try to contact her, and the suspense kicks into high gear as the kids defy Martha's parents to right a terrible wrong.

Swindells has crafted a compelling novel that will keep you reading to the very last page.

You have to read this awsome book!!!

Ambomination is an exellent book! It is hard for me to find books that I like and this book was great from the start! Ambomination is about a girl named Martha who is very different from the other children. Her mother makes her clothes and she can't invite anyone in the house because they might find out about Abomination. This book kept me reading because I wanted to know what Abomination was and what would happen to Martha. This book was the best book I ever read! Martha is beaten by her parents and starved so I would recomend this book to anyone who wouldn't mind reading about parents who beat and starve their children and I recomend this book to people that don't like reading. Trust me this book rocks!!!!

Good reading

Not the kind of book I usually read, but I'm soon going on the Brazos River and had heard about this book. The author writes in a conversational, sometimes cowboy sort of style, about his trip down the Brazos River and camping out of his canoe. He interjects a lot of stories from the days of the Comanches and pioneers. It's very interesting to hear about a particular skirmish that occurred near the spot that you're going to visit. Very colorful. Good reading.

A Must Read ! 5 Stars Is Not Enough !

What an incredibly good read. John Graves narrative is an astounding lesson in history, ecology and philosophy, with a command of the English language that borders on meditative poetry. Astoundingly scholarly yet it's easy, relaxing, serene, as well as entertaining and educational. You can see, feel and smell the river and environs as you "turn off your mind and float downstream" (apologies to the Beatles). You best be well read to catch all the off hand and subtlety casual literary references he makes at times, what a sheer delight and added spice to his prose. Shakespearean and Audubon like in nature at times Graves adds a strong dash of "cedar chopper/hunter/story teller" at others. There is an amazing array of characters past and present, chilling stories of Comanche's and settlers and modern day inhabitants, peaceful days and dangerous stormy weather that instill action and fire into an otherwise serene trip downstream. Graves multifaceted personality and writing style is uncommonly literary and readable at the same. This is an amazing book, to be savored a few pages at time, read slowly and enjoyed, just like Graves' lazy trip down the river in his canoe.

John Graves will eventually be remembered as a 20th century Mark Twain. A through and
through Texan, but with an unusual sensitivity to nuance and nature, capable of capturing in
words sentiments that move and inspire the reader.

I once complained to Texas Monthly magazine that they were not publishing enough of his work and
much to my surprise, an assistant editor contacted me and arranged for me to meet Mr. Graves
at a book signing event. I was not disappointed as a some what wizened, sun burned gent eyed me
over while offering his gnarled hand. I related to him
how as a youngster I too had traveled down a favorite "creek" that was soon to be lost under the
flood waters of a new dam. He listened carefully and muttered about progress destroying nature.

A well-balanced treatment of Hong Kong's history that lives up to its name

A Modern History of Hong Kong presents a supremely well-balanced history of this former British imperial possession. Steve Tsang's meticulously researched historical narrative duly recognizes the efforts of both Hong Kong's industrious and civic-minded local Chinese population and the expatriate British who held the bulk of the administrative power over Hong Kong during its tenure as a crown colony. Tsang's work demonstrates that Hong Kong's ethnic Chinese inhabitants played an essential and dynamic role in the creation of the former colony in that they constituted its economic, industrial, and infrastructural workforce from the beginning, and came to develop their own unique Hong Kong identity as the population stabilized culturally but exploded in number in the decades following the Second World War. Tsang's historical account never strays far from what students of Marxist theory would likely refer to as Hong Kong's material conditions, in that the book portrays Hong Kong's cultural development within the context of its economic and political circumstances. The work puts forth a history of Hong Kong in which the colony's unique social and cultural characteristics were established as a result of the relatively minimalist legal and political framework that was provided by the British colonizers in order to ensure Hong Kong's capitalistic success. Students of history, English, postcolonial studies, comparative literature, and other academic disciplines will find this book to be a fascinating primer for further studies into both Hong Kong's history and the colonial and postcolonial initiatives of Britain and other Eurasian countries. General readers and academics alike who are interested in Hong Kong's history will find Steve Tsang's book to be a lively, entertaining, and fair treatment of the forces and events that led to the formation of this former colony and to the creation of its current identity as a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.

Best book on Hong Kong

This is by far the best book on Hong Kong I have ever read. It is clearly written, balanced, and insightful. My family and I have lived in Hong Kong for years and it is nice to read a book that describes a place one knows well in beautifully written prose. It is fair about both the British and the local Chinese communities. When I read the chapter on the rise of a Hong Kong identity I know this is really good. It rings true. Most highly recommended.

An excellent history of Hong Kong

This history is well balanced, thoroughly researched and very readable. It covers the period from the Opium Wars when the British obtained the rocky island referred to as "fragrant harbour" (Hong Kong) to the handover of one of the world's preeminent trading and financial centres to the PRC. The strength of the text is that it makes very clear that Hong Kong's existence was a function of the relative power of China and Britain. As China disintegrated in the 19th Century and European powers took little pieces for themselves, Britain was the leading European in the area, and (after serving itself) even sought to protect China against its European competitors. When the costs of World War II and the Japanese Empire broke the back of Europe's colonies in Asia, a new chapter began in Hong Kong as well. Prof. Tsang shows a Hong Kong that somewhat resembles the United States in that it is a refuge for immigrants from troubled foreign countries, although in the case of Hong Kong almost everyone came from China. Tsang does not shy away from depicting the racist and elitist practices of Victorian England towards the Chinese refugees who made up Hong Kong's population, but stresses that what the colonial masters had to offer (particularly the rule of law and civil service) was much better than what these people could expect from their Chinese homeland. This portrait of the people of Hong Kong is extremely sympathetic, even endearing. They appear as enterprising refugees who had no real power to defend themselves against either Imperial Britain or Communist China except making Hong Kong such a special (and wealthy) place that the power current overshadowing them would look favorably to giving them space to breathe. This is not only a captivating and informative history, but also an excellent study of colonies generally and culture: it shows how and the extent to which a Western economy and society can develop in a culture that remains completely Chinese.

Captivating

Long ago I made a decision to stop reading fiction and only read true accounts of peoples lives. This book captured my attention first because of the Ukrainian heritage that I have with my mother, and second because the story was set primarily in Alberta, Canada, which is where I now reside.

There are countless current stories of young men and women showing courage and determination to achieve a goal in academics, sport, and humanities to name a few. But take yourself back 100 years to the time of the story of young Nick Woronuk emigrating to Canada by himself, weeks of travel to simply arrive in Canada, then somehow to make his way to Manitoba to find relatives that had emigrated years before him, literally walking hundreds of miles to find and claim land in Alberta that the Canadian government allowed them in return for farming and populating western Canada. It hardly seems fair that the words "courage" and "determination" can be used to describe the challenges of today's societies after reading Quest for Eden.

This story is wonderfully written, rich in details about the cultures being brought to Canada, and those being left behind in the Ukraine. For those of us that are fortunate enough to live in North America, it reminds us that we are here because of the bravery, extremely hard work, and sacrifices that our European ancestors made when they decided to venture far from home to a land they were unfamiliar with and with a size that was overwhelming, without the benefit of the English language, with no contacts to help them on their journey, and only a few dollars to spend.

Quest for Eden is such a wonderful story and a captivating read, you'll enjoy every page as it paints a vivid picture in your mind of the lives of the Woronuk, Lazoruk and Chalus families.

Fascinating insight into the era of pioneers

This book fascinates through obvious authenticity. Told by a profound expert and descendant of the story’s protagonists, it gives an amazingly deep insight into the era of pioneers and the formation of the Canadian nation. Marvelous reading. Although mainly biographic, the novel is gripping and tremendously interesting, especially when you know some of the sites. I really do hope this fine contribution to Canadian literature will gain the attention it deserves. As a European and Canada lover, the book has been a highly welcome contribution to my knowledge about this great country’s history. It will for sure get a special place in my personal library.

About the Author

Justin Forest has five college degrees, including a MLSt in taboo studies and a PhD in literature and criticism.

While working as an English professor for over a decade, Forest has edited various academic journals and published poetry and fiction.

Previously, Forest compiled information for the United Nations on the anti-child sex trafficking movement and has since transitioned to a sexuality researcher and member of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality. He now teaches themes of girlhood and sexuality and also acts as a supporting member of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists.

Forest currently lives in the United States with his wife and children.

this book brings to the front the need for much better education as our children are growing up to prevent ...

I had occasion to work with sex offfenders for ten years. I found that they were just average people who gave in to an impulse and got caught. None of them were the violent predators that the media make them out to be. Of course violent predators exist, but they were not allowed into this program. That being said, many of the issues that were raised during the treatment process, were also addressed in this book by Justin Forest. Our societ ies Victorian attit;udes are making criminals of anyone who has even thought about sex, meaning all of us. Forest brings to light how harmful these attitudes have become. Sex has long been considered "bad" or "evil" in our society. It is not. If nothing else, this book brings to the front the need for much better education as our children are growing up to prevent so many irrational sexual attitudes in adulthood. The media and government need to become more educated and accept that sex offenders are not all the same and adjust the laws to take that into consideration. For example, why is public urination a sex crime? My hat is off to Justin Forest for writing this book.

It was a look in to the unthinkable. Compelling and a come to terms type of novel. A good read. Not for the faint of heart.

Very difficult to Follow.

I really tried to make it through this book. I just did not understand what the author was trying to convey.
I normally read a book within a day or two, but this one I kept putting it down and thinking when will it get better.
The author was all over the place. Jumping back and forth between the present and the past.
The story did not flow and I just could not figure out what point he was trying to make other than he loved all females of all ages.
