Captivating

Long ago I made a decision to stop reading fiction and only read true accounts of peoples lives. This book captured my attention first because of the Ukrainian heritage that I have with my mother, and second because the story was set primarily in Alberta, Canada, which is where I now reside.
There are countless current stories of young men and women showing courage and determination to achieve a goal in academics, sport, and humanities to name a few. But take yourself back 100 years to the time of the story of young Nick Woronuk emigrating to Canada by himself, weeks of travel to simply arrive in Canada, then somehow to make his way to Manitoba to find relatives that had emigrated years before him, literally walking hundreds of miles to find and claim land in Alberta that the Canadian government allowed them in return for farming and populating western Canada. It hardly seems fair that the words "courage" and "determination" can be used to describe the challenges of today's societies after reading Quest for Eden.
This story is wonderfully written, rich in details about the cultures being brought to Canada, and those being left behind in the Ukraine. For those of us that are fortunate enough to live in North America, it reminds us that we are here because of the bravery, extremely hard work, and sacrifices that our European ancestors made when they decided to venture far from home to a land they were unfamiliar with and with a size that was overwhelming, without the benefit of the English language, with no contacts to help them on their journey, and only a few dollars to spend.
Quest for Eden is such a wonderful story and a captivating read, you'll enjoy every page as it paints a vivid picture in your mind of the lives of the Woronuk, Lazoruk and Chalus families.

Fascinating insight into the era of pioneers

This book fascinates through obvious authenticity. Told by a profound expert and descendant of the story’s protagonists, it gives an amazingly deep insight into the era of pioneers and the formation of the Canadian nation. Marvelous reading. Although mainly biographic, the novel is gripping and tremendously interesting, especially when you know some of the sites. I really do hope this fine contribution to Canadian literature will gain the attention it deserves. As a European and Canada lover, the book has been a highly welcome contribution to my knowledge about this great country’s history. It will for sure get a special place in my personal library.
