Why did a group of Roman senators gather near Pompey's theater on March 15, 44 B.C., to kill Julius Caesar? Was it their fear of Caesar's tyrannical power? Or were these aristocratic senators worried that Caesar's land reforms and leanings toward democracy would upset their own control over the Roman Republic? Parenti (History as Mystery, etc.) narrates a provocative history of the late republic in Rome (100-33 B.C.) to demonstrate that Caesar's death was the culmination of growing class conflict, economic disparity and political corruption. He reconstructs the history of these crucial years from the perspective of the Roman people, the masses of slaves, plebs and poor farmers who possessed no political power. Roughly 99% of the state's wealth was controlled by 1% of the population, according to Parenti. By the 60s B.C., the poor populace had begun to find spokesmen among such leaders as the tribunes Tiberius Gracchus and his younger brother, Gaius. Although the Gracchi attempted to introduce various reforms, they were eventually murdered, and the reform movements withered. Julius Caesar, says Parenti, took up where they left off, introducing laws to improve the condition of the poor, redistributing land and reducing unemployment. As Parenti points out, such efforts threatened the landed aristocracy's power in the Senate and resulted in Caesar's assassination. Parenti's method of telling history from the "bottom up" will be controversial, but he recreates the struggles of the late republic with such scintillating storytelling and deeply examined historical insight that his book provides an important alternative to the usual views of Caesar and the Roman Empire.

A great book in my opinion

A great book in my opinion. Not your typical point of view on Rome and Julius Caesar. Definitely presents a new point of view that offers readers much to ponder on. Highly recommend as today's literature on the matter is incredibly biased and narrow minded.

The hypocrisy of the assassins of Caesar, and the bias of history

Michael Parenti, page 151: "Caesar reduced the numbers on the grain dole from 320,000 to 150,000 ridding the swollen lists of fraudulent recipients, including slaveholders who deliberately would 'free' their workforce then present their slaves' food bill to the state for reimbursement. Caesar prohibited the hoarding of huge sums of cash, and eased the desperate straits of a large debtor class by allowing people to repay their debts at lower prewar rates. He also imposed usury limits on creditors, at the same time forbidding them from suing for any arrears of interest that exceeded the sum of the original loan. He forbade proscription, property confiscation, and fines on debtors. He ordered all interest already paid to be deducted from principle owed, and canceled the interest due since the beginning of the civil war. This last measure alone, Suetonius reckons, erased one quarter of all outstanding debt......There are two theories about why people fall deeply into debt. The first says that persons burdened with high rents, extortionate taxes, and low income are often unable to earn enough or keep enough of what they earn. So they are forced to borrow on their future labor, hoping that things will take a favorable turn."
The Roman landowner creditor class, from which the assassins came, had a multitude of reasons to murder Caesar. His moves to outlaw their payday loan businesses was only one. From Cato the Younger to Cicero, the titans of Roman aristocracy are exposed to be hypocrites and schemers, whose primary objective was to preserve their power and wealth, not the unwritten Constitution of the Roman Republic. Parenti says the 'gentlemen historians' who have written on ancient Rome, and which he often quotes, have held that the Senate assassins of Caesar were virtuous and unsullied heroes of democracy and human rights, largely because the historians come from the same moneyed upper class background, creating a strong bias. Parenti upturns this standard historical view, which also holds that the commoners were an unruly contemptible mob easily manipulated by despots. He also recounts the circumstances of the murders of other 'populares' (of Caesar's Party) by 'optimate' assassin squads.

The Pitchforks are Coming

Finally a scholar reads the works of classical historians with a jaundiced eye toward the senatorial plutocracy in Roman society and presents a a more even-handed view of the true state of affairs in the Late Republic. Just reading about Caesar's activities during his few months in office was already contributing to my own disagreement with the propaganda against him as the destroyer of the Republic. This book convinced me that Caesar, rather than a plutocrat and a demagogue crazy for tyrannical power was one of the populares who realized no reform would come without seizing power and forcing the optimates to share at least a living wage and modicum of civil rights with the masses. It appears that nothing has changed and that the plutocrats are always unjust and greedy with no concern for their fellow citizens until those citizens refuse to fight in the army and violently riot in the streets. It's only with the "wolves at the doors" that justice eventually prevails.
