Dry and unreadable

The book itself is very dry and mostly for people that haven't discovered themselves yet. Don't buy this book if you are planning on reading it on anything other than your phone. The copyright won't let you! It reads as a PDF on a phone, that just doesn't work. Go to the bookstore instead. Or just ask your department to have a copy or two that you can borrow.

Jesus Christ came to earth. Died and was resurrected. That's basic Christian theology.

He established a Church before He died and during His post resurrection ministry. This is where some Christians start disagreeing.

The Church He founded changed. A fact. But there is wide disagreement on whether this is a good thing. Thus we have the Protestant Reformation and various versions of Christianity today.

The Church changed so much that reform was not enough. It was necessary to start again and re-establish the Church with Apostles and authority as had the Ancient Church. That's where this book begins.

An Apostle of the restored Church of Jesus Christ explains how that all happened. The Great Apostasy takes its name from the process of falling away from the Ancient Church of Jesus Christ. It also explains about the restoration of His Church.

This is not written as a history, but as an apostolic treatise. It uses history and scripture to enlighten.

The writing style is somewhat dated. Reads like many tomes written during the first half of the 20th century. Very good for understanding the theological underpinnings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

About the Author
Elizabeth L. Eisenstein is the Alice Freeman Palmer Professor of History (Emerita) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is the author of many book and articles, including The Printing Press as an Agent of Change (Cambridge, 1979) and Grub Street Abroad: Aspects of the Eighteenth Century French Cosmopolitan Press (1992). In 2002, she was awarded the American Historial Association's Award for Scholarly Distinction.

Extremely useful for understand both Reformation and Renaissance

Eisenstein's book details how printing changed our world. Not only the way ideas and information were communicated, but how we think, how we do research, how we interact, and even how censorship in one area (e.g., censorship of Protestant writings in Catholic areas inadvertently curtailed scientific publishing as well). She has recognized implications and trends that have not even yet been fully worked through in our culture, and this necessarily limited survey doesn't even touch on other technologies through the centuries since the printing revolution: movable type, telegraph, telephone, computer technology, and the net.

The book can be dry at times (even in this relatively short book, she's covering a lot of material) but it is well worth the reading. To get an idea of how she thinks, this is a useful video featuring her as well:

The consequences of the Supreme Court's ruling in Massachusetts v. EPA that the U.S. EPA has authority under the Clean Air Act to regulate carbon dioxide;

The potential role of common law litigation such as the claims of the Inupiat Village of Kivalina that ExxonMobil and other large emitters of greenhouse gases should pay the costs of relocating their village, which is subsiding into the ocean due to climate change;

An examination of how U.S. energy policy and transportation policies affect climate change; and

An exploration of regional, state, and local actions, including regional emissions trading programs and renewable portfolio standards.
