Good Book, Bad Listing and Cover Photo

This is probably a good book, but I have to complain about the listing (I would give the listing lower than three stars but I don't want to ding the book itself). The listing picture of the book says Maiden Voyage, Guitar Voicings. That's it. When you get the book, there's more text including "companion to the Aebersold Volume 54 Play-a-Long." This book augments but doesn't replace that other title so you need both.

this book and c.d. is just Great everything about it. the Voicing are perfect.so much fun to play with and learn his insightful approach and techniques to chords and comping. this book is essential for all Jazz Guitarists. learn to put effortlessly the cool grove in your playing.To Much Fun

Excellent

There are a lot of books about jazz guitar voicing. There also are a lot of books about single line improvisation with real life examples. What we do not find a lot is a book about a real life comping technique. This book is it. This teaches me that simple drop 2 voicing can make very sophisticated and excellent comping. You do not need to use too many esoteric, difficult-to-grab voicings in order to sound modern. Just by going through those tunes in the book, and play together with the accompanying CD, I am learning a lot more about comping than many textbooks I used before put together.
My recommendation is first you learn basics of drop 2 voicings by Randy Vincent's book, and then move on to this one. Another recommendation is to purchase the original "Maiden Voyage" by Jamey Abbersold's piano trio and compare the sound, and play your single line solo with it as well.

Silly, but fun

I downloaded this book because I was intrigued by the subtitle, "A Tale of the Great Trek." Well, it wasn't really about the trek -- it was about an impossibly wonderful and perfect girl and her even more impossibly wonderful and perfect, and abnormally devoted, black servant/"witch doctress." One doesn't read this sort of book looking for literature, but the yarn was well-knit, if it is possible to say that, and I kept turning the pages. There is some interesting information about the Afrikaner lifestyle in the 19th century, and the first person narrative voice is essentially successful, especially in the beginning. But, come on -- when was the last time you saw a man "wringing his hands"?
If you know what you are getting into -- basically a Classics Illustrated comic book, rife with political incorrectness -- you'll find this an amusing way to pass an hour in the doctor's office, for example. If you expect something that toes the line of contemporary thinking,you will be horrified. Caveat reader.

A lovely story - romantic and exciting

Rider Haggard was an immensely popular writer, and every new novel of his was eagerly awaited, and then devoured by his fans. It is worth the trouble to go beyond King Solomon's Mines, his best-known work, there are many more exciting stories to discover! Swallow is a totally believable character, and so is her tough little friend, a kind of witch-doctor princess. Their tale is narrated by Swallow's mother. What a story! You won't be able to put your Kindle down.

Long but interesting journey...

Enjoyed the thought of the little girl finding a brother and then watching them grow up together. I never studied the boor wars but this made me want to go read more about it. Unsettling how the people never seemed to have a solid home between the Brits and the Kaffirs and the Zulus.

About the Author
Shane Read is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Texas School of Law. He began his legal career in 1989 at Akin Gump in Dallas, Texas, before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, D.C. from 1992-1998. Since 1998, he has worked at the U.S. Attorney s Office in Dallas. He has been lead counsel on countless civil and criminal trials over the past eighteen years. In addition, he has served as lead counsel for numerous oral arguments before appellate courts. He has also held a wide variety of teaching positions during his career. He is currently an adjunct professor at Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. Here he has taught Trial Advocacy, coached mock trial teams, and currently is teaching a unique seminar on trial strategies. He has also taught both new and experienced lawyers at NITAs seminars on trial skills and at the Department of Justice's National Advocacy Center.

A Well Written, Well Presented Exposition of Trial Advocacy

A journeyman knows the mechanics of his trade where a master craftsman knows not only the mechanics, but the theory behind his trade. It is easy to see that the author of this work is a master craftsman as well as a master teacher.

"Winning at Trial" gives clear, concise guidance on how to navigate the turbulent waters of a trial without running aground. Mr. Read teaches not only the basics, but also the nuances of courtroom performance, and does so with concrete, real-world examples from actual cases. The information is presented within the National Institute for Trial Advocacy's model for trial advocacy, and that model is an excellent one.

I particularly liked Mr. Read's handling of cross examination. His description of the objectives of cross examination was very good, his instruction on how to impeach by prior inconsistent statement was sound, and he gave an excellent analysis of when and how to ask the ultimate question.

Great practice tool

I am a former student from Mr. Read's Trial Techniques Course at SMU, and I can say without hesitation that this book was the most helpful tool I received in law school (aside from, perhaps, the Blue Book). Even after leaving law school, I consulted "Winning at Trial" both in my studies for the practical portion of the Bar, and in actual litigation practice. The recommendations provided by Mr. Read are straightforward and extremely relevant to practicing in court today. The book is easy to read, and well organized, so if you require guidance on a particular aspect of trial, it can be readily found. The examples given are also factually engaging, which makes it an entertaining read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who plans to practice litigation, and to anyone already practicing who is looking to take their litigation practice to the next level.

Finally, A Trial Practice Book For The 21st Century

If Abraham Lincoln observed most trial lawyers of today, he would find little changed from his 19th Century heyday. It is almost as if there is a law forbidding the use of modern communication techniques and technology in the courtroom. The leaden weight of traditional advocacy training often leads to boredom. Part of the root problem is the lack of suitable books to assist law students and practicing lawyers in developing a sophisticated media influenced form of trial advocacy.
Shane Read has changed all of that in this unique, thoughtful, thorough look at the art of the possible. Above all else, a book about the exciting world of trying cases ought to be exciting itself. This one is. The multi-media approach of this book is unique. The author's considerable experience in trying cases comes through as well. I have been teaching trial advocacy for 25 years and highly recommend this book.

Comprehensive and easily accessible

Farrell has a large amount of negative reviews on most of her books. However, I believe this edition of An Object-Oriented Approach to Programming Logic and Design is the exception. Having personally read through and used her Java book, and after talking with my professor who has used many previous editions of her Programming Logic and Design books, I've determined that the 4th edition of this book is something special.

Farrell's previous editions were quite difficult to navigate, even for someone with prior programming experience, even though they are made for and marketed towards beginners. This book breaks that horrible tradition, giving those new to programming a solid foundation before moving on to concepts that are more difficult. Although programming in general is a difficult subject to learn (and teach), this book does a tremendous job at including everything a student needs to know without becoming overwhelming.

Most of this book revolves around and uses pseudocode for its programming, which is a language-less programming "code" that serves as a blueprint when designing classes, objects, and applications. Originally, I had wondered why Farrell did not include a well-known language, such as Java or C++, to help teach programming concepts. Later, I learned that by using a universal pseudocode, I was avoiding all of the difficulties in learning the ins and outs of a certain language, and instead was able to focus entirely on the logic and design of the code. Now, I can apply the logic to any programming language, instead of being limited by any particular instance. Additionally, while the book is written with pseudocode, many examples show what the code looks like in C++, Visual Basic, and Java. They are there as add-ons, to show what the programs can look like, but they are not used to teach any of the material.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in programming or computer science. This book has given me a tremendous foundation to continue my education.

Books are either great or garbage to me. This text was well written and designed. Explanations although lengthy were clear. The only recommendation that I would make to the author would be to eliminate wording or text that doesn't contribute to a once, but well done explanation of the concepts at hand. In other words, further refining the text to make it a bit more brief while not detracting from the depth of the explanation of a concept. Examples, can and should build off of each other to develop complexity and further explore a concept. However, once that it is accomplished a concept should be left to pursue another concept.
