Amazon.com Review
Be very, very afraid. When you step through your door for an innocent excursion, grave danger awaits. You might be mugged; tied up; attacked by scorpions, piranhas, or tarantulas; trapped in a falling plane or elevator, a runaway train, a car on a cliff, a sandstorm, a riptide, or a riot. But now it's safe to take that vacation anyway. Just pack The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Travel, and you'll know what to do when you find yourself, say, leaping between rooftops: "Because you will not be moving fast, it is safe to roll head over heels, unlike jumping from a moving vehicle." Now you'll also know what not to do: never pick up a tarantula, as the spines on their abdomens are like little harpoons, and don't yank the reins of a runaway camel ("Pulling on the nose reins can tear the camel's nose--or break the reins"). You may have the sense, if a leech invades your air passage, to gargle with a 50 percent solution of 80-proof alcohol--but without this book, would you remember not to inhale?

In short, this is the most delightfully terrifying, all-true, laugh-out-loud hilarious book since the original Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook, which covers such horrors as alligators and quicksand. Don't leave home without it! --Tim Appelo

From Publishers Weekly
Just in time for summer travel, the hyperimaginative and slightly paranoid authors of The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook, 1999's favorite gift book, deliver what will no doubt become popular airport reading for stranded passengers in 2001. Starting with the cheery statistic that "more than 50 percent of all travelers run into problems," and the basic advisory to "always be ready for the worst," the book presents concise and extremely knowledgeable "how-to" assistance on a range of topics: e.g., stopping a runaway train, surviving a hostage situation, escaping from a car hanging over the edge of a cliff, surviving in a plummeting elevator, navigating a minefield, crossing a piranha-infested river, treating a severed limb, removing a leech and even foiling a UFO abduction. Like their earlier handbook, the success of each entry is based on the authors' ability to provide detailed and truly helpful advice on even the most outlandish or horrific situation and make the reader think, "Sure, I could successfully crash-land a small propeller plane on water, or easily climb out of a deep well, or locate and treat individual bleeding arteries on the stump of a severed arm. Nothing to it!" Their delivery evinces a calm precision that even the most worried traveler will find reassuring if faced with one or more of these eventualities, such as trying to escape when tied up ("When your captives start binding you, expand your body as much as possible") or encountering an extraterrestrial biological entity (EBE), unlikely as that might be: "Firmly tell the EBE to leave you alone... Go for the EBE's eyes (if they have any) you will not know what its other, more sensitive, areas are." Although some appendixes on strategies for packing, etc., seem boilerplate, overall this is another eminently practical, enjoyable survival guide. Watch out for those tsunamis! Illus. (May)Forecast: The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook was a runaway bestseller. This will be, too.

Review

PEOPLE
Quick: You're on an elevator when the cable snaps, plunging you into free fall. What do you do? Jump in the air at the moment of impact, right? Sure, except that the elevator "will likely collapse...and crush you," note the authors of the bestseller The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook. The right answer: Lie flat on the floor to distribute the impact. In deadpan tone, Piven and Borgenicht advise how to survive a plane crash, remove a leech (burning it off will make it regurgitate, causing infection who knew?) and escape from the trunk of a car. The scenarios owe a debt to action flick clich's how often do you find yourself leaping from rooftop to rooftop? but their utter implausibility doesn't make this read any less riveting.

Fun read.
By KAFBA
I bought this to kill some time reading on a short flight. I don't know if all of the tips in the book are really workable but it was fun to read and at least one or two could come in handy. Hopefully I won't need to bribe a third world government official and I am not likely to be trapped on a runaway camel but if I do I will have some idea how to do it.

If you are looking for a book you can finish on a 45 minute flight and get a chuckle as you read and imagine yourself in the situations that the book describes-- this is your book.

But if you are looking for real world survival tips that are technical and detailed enough to actually use you need a different book and you will need to practice most of the tips. (you probably won't be able to land a small plane in the water and survive by reading over this book once or twice...)

Have fun with it.

Fun, informative read
By monique
My daughter enjoyed this book a great deal, there is some very practical advice in it! There may also be some less than practical advice, but I'll let you form your own opinions about that. Overall this was a really good gift and I'm glad to have purchased it! It went over very well.

One hour of reading
By Barry L. Brumfield
Slightly entertaining, but trivial. Other than copy and paste from safety, operational, and owner's manuals, there is no depth in advice given. At times offers dangerous choices without proper safety warnings, such as, if your car's brakes fail use the car traveling in front of you to stop yours by running into the back of it. A loose collection of really far fetched what ifs with an even looser collection of "answers" on how to extract yourself. A pamphlet of common (and not so common) sense. Sells for $1.99, should be priced at 99 cents with a page quantity listed front and center.

I had to buy this book for a marine ecology class. I found the text very easy to understand and straightforward. It covers a wide variety of subjects, but because of this it does not go into great detail on many things, which is unfortunate.

Selling Hitler: Propaganda and the Nazi Brand, by Nicholas O'Shaughnessy

Hitler was one of the few politicians who understood that persuasion was everything, deployed to anchor an entire regime in the confections of imagery, rhetoric and dramaturgy. The Nazis pursued propaganda not just as a tool, an instrument of government, but also as the totality, the raison d'tre, the medium through which power itself was exercised. Moreover, Nicholas O'Shaughnessy argues, Hitler, not Goebbels, was the prime mover in the propaganda regime of the Third Reich - its editor and first author.

Under the Reich everything was a propaganda medium, a building-block of public consciousness, from typography to communiqus, to architecture, to weapons design. There were groups to initiate rumours and groups to spread graffiti. Everything could be interrogated for its propaganda potential, every surface inscribed with polemical meaning, whether an enemy city's name, an historical epic or the poster on a neighbourhood wall. But Hitler was in no sense an innovator - his ideas were always second-hand. Rather his expertise was as a packager, fashioning from the accumulated mass of icons and ideas, the historic debris, the labyrinths and byways of the German mind, a modern and brilliant political show articulated through deftly managed symbols and rituals. The Reich would have been unthinkable without propaganda - it would not have been the Reich.

Review

"Selling Hitler is a thorough, bitter, and entirely virtuoso performance, ranging fluently over all the various mechanisms by which the Nazi propaganda apparatus attempted to create the idea of a nationalist paradise just out of reach, deliverable only by the new order."--Open Letters Monthly

"A fresh, surprising and important look at a neglected aspect of the history of Nazi Germany."--Jewish Journal

This is a fascinating and sophisticated analysis that answers a baffling question: why and how did Germany allow Hitler to come to power?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.
All the people, all the time
By David Wineberg
Hitler started out in PR. He was an army propagandist. When the war was over and he found himself back in civilian life, he joined a small labor party as communications director. He soon ousted the founder and created an incident in Munich that led to a sensational trial. This made him a national politician and celebrity. He devoted two chapters of Mein Kampf to the importance of propaganda. He developed the truck-mounted loudspeaker to publicize speeches and martial music. He was constantly on the radio. He invented quasi-religious ceremonies like the entrance of the flagbearers. The endless repetition of simple and simplistic slogans cemented his party’s control of mindset. He admired the British propaganda machine, claiming it was responsible for victory over Germany in WWI. Under Hitler, Germany became enamored of Madison Avenue, and applied its lessons. Selling Hitler is a master class in brand marketing.

The Nazis controlled all communication. When Hitler made a speech, everyone had to place speakers in the streets so all would hear him. The party bought a film studio and produced newsreels to suit, as well as feature films that reminded viewers of the greatness that was Germany, the traditions and the myths that built a nation. In addition to radio, newspaper, film and public spectacles, Hitler actively spread rumors in whisper campaigns. Like internet “facts” today, Nazi propaganda, repeated constantly, soon became truths. “The idea was not to brainwash, but to show that the great mass of Germans believed” – and so should you. Everyone was to be on message, all the time. It was as high pressure and comprehensive a marketing campaign as was ever implemented.

Symbolism was the default mode of Nazi terminology. Everything was measured for its symbolic possibilities. To the point where roofs had to be pitched because flat roofs were Middle Eastern and therefore Jewish. The word fanatic became the highest term of approval. Absolutely everything was meant to persuade. From architecture to ceremonies, from word choice to myths, from symbols to sounds, everything had to add value to the Nazi brand. Hitler himself rotated the swastika to give it dynamism (moving upwards towards the right). Every public space was an opportunity for a symbolic message, carved in stone, draped in a flag or mounted with a statue.

So when Hitler announced it was Poland that invaded Germany, everyone believed it. There was no other credible source. During the war, the propaganda machine simply attributed German atrocities to the victims, making local Germans the true victims of Polish, British or French horrors. Everyone bought it.

O’Shaughnessy’s book is as thorough and complete as it could possibly be. He examines every aspect of language, custom, dress, myths, media, words, phrases and scapegoats. He acknowledges that Hitler actually invented none of it. All of these tactics have been employed before (and since). But Hitler pulled it all together, and with Goebbels as his tool, implemented ubiquitously.

There is a great deal of space given to Jews as scapegoats, but even Hitler admitted that if there were no Jews, he would have had to invent them. There was actually risk that if he did manage to eliminate all Jews, he would lose mindshare. It was that central to distracting Germans, and he knew it. In an interesting side note, Alexis de Tocqueville warned that idiotic notions of race superiority and social Darwinism would play only too well in Germany. This was the 1850s, when the word Aryan got transferred from the name of a language to the name of a (nonexistent) race. Germans already had a reputation for being suggestible to such myths.

History Repeats Itself
By Thomas F. Murphy
Mr. O'Shaughnessy states his premise in his introduction. Propaganda was the lifeblood pumped from the heart of the National Socialist Workers Party. He then corroborates his position with an exhaustive and admirably documented examination of the strategy and tactics brought to bear in each stage of the Nazi party's existence: birth, coming of age, dominance and death throes.

None of the bogus theories trumpeted by Hitler were original. Everything was borrowed. Attribution was distorted and specious yet all through the early years up to Stalingrad, Hitler and his acolytes were able to convince Germans that what they wanted to believe was what he was giving them. Even after Hitler's suicide, half of the German people believed in him.

Ancient history? Mass rallies, the draw of entertainment, simplicity of language and sloganeering, sky-is-falling rhetoric, press and other media manipulation, rumor and innuendo offered to a part of society that is searching for international respect and vindication, we witness it in our own time. The enemy is at our doorstep. True, the media are more sophisticated, but the elements of propaganda remain the same.

Well done, Mr. O'.

Useful resource for team sport S&C practitioners
By Mike R McGuigan
The second edition of Strength and Conditioning for Team Sports by Paul Gamble is very useful text for team sport practitioners. A major strength of the book is that it is evidence based and relies heavily on published research. Given the increasing amount of published research studies, it is good to have an updated summary of this information across areas that are relevant to strength and conditioning practitioners working in team sports.

The book begins with a general discussion of training principles and assessment and then works through training different physical capacities such as strength, power, agility, metabolic conditioning and speed. There is a heavy emphasis on injury prevention as well as specialised topics such as periodisation and physical preparation for team sports. Throughout the book there are a good range of figures showing different exercises that practitioners might not be familiar with.

Another nice feature of the book is it is written by someone who understands the unique challenges of working in team sport environments and there is some good discussion and suggested solutions for some of these factors such as extended competition seasons, concurrent training etc. The book finishes with some practical examples of training design across some different sports that should give practitioners a good starting point for design of their own training programs for team sports.

Information Dense
By andrew flatt
This text is very dense with research supported information. The author included an abundance of current and relevant research that you won't see in many of the "traditional" texts. This is not a manual or a "how to" book that provides cookie cutter programs. Rather, it provides the science and theory behind sports training.

Overall, a good resource of information pertaining to S&C for team sports.

Objective and practical
By Tommi
Scientific research articles on any subject are often difficult to read and the conclusions are hard to put into practice. Paul Gamble has done his research brilliantly and made it palatable, objective and practical. Despite the higher price, an excellent purchase and a read and a definite must have for a strength and conditioning coach working with team sports.

The Pseudoscience Wars: Immanuel Velikovsky and the Birth of the Modern Fringe, by Michael D. Gordin

Properly analyzed, the collective mythological and religious writings of humanity reveal that around 1500 BC, a comet swept perilously close to Earth, triggering widespread natural disasters and threatening the destruction of all life before settling into solar orbit as Venus, our nearest planetary neighbor.Sound implausible? Well, from 1950 until the late 1970s, a huge number of people begged to differ, as they devoured Immanuel Velikovsky’s major best-seller, Worlds in Collision, insisting that perhaps this polymathic thinker held the key to a new science and a new history. Scientists, on the other hand, assaulted Velikovsky’s book, his followers, and his press mercilessly from the get-go. In The Pseudoscience Wars, Michael D. Gordin resurrects the largely forgotten figure of Velikovsky and uses his strange career and surprisingly influential writings to explore the changing definitions of the line that separates legitimate scientific inquiry from what is deemed bunk, and to show how vital this question remains to us today. Drawing on a wealth of previously unpublished material from Velikovsky’s personal archives, Gordin presents a behind-the-scenes history of the writer’s career, from his initial burst of success through his growing influence on the counterculture, heated public battles with such luminaries as Carl Sagan, and eventual eclipse. Along the way, he offers fascinating glimpses into the histories and effects of other fringe doctrines, including creationism, Lysenkoism, parapsychology, and more—all of which have surprising connections to Velikovsky’s theories.Science today is hardly universally secure, and scientists seem themselves beset by critics, denialists, and those they label “pseudoscientists”—as seen all too clearly in battles over evolution and climate change. The Pseudoscience Wars simultaneously reveals the surprising Cold War roots of our contemporary dilemma and points readers to a different approach to drawing the line between knowledge and nonsense.

Review
"What is the difference between science and pseudoscience? As the publisher of Skeptic magazine and the 'Skeptic columnist for Scientific American I am frequently asked this question. Believe it or not, it'a a hard question to answer. Michael Gordin's The Pseudoscience Wars is the best single volume I have come across in my vast reading on the topic. He clearly and succinctly captures all sides on the debate, is rigorous in his research and fair to both believers and skeptics, and his narrative reconstruction of the Velikovsky affair makes for gripping reading. The Pseudoscience Wars is destined to become a classic in science literature."

(Michael Shermer, publisher of Skeptic magazine, monthly columnist for Scientific American , author of The Believing Brain)

“Few issues loom more important today than the boundaries and authority of scientific expertise. How do the boundaries get created and reinforced, and what work do terms like ‘pseudoscience’ do in the debates? By delving deep into one of the earliest border skirmishes of the modern age—the fascinating, beguiling case of Immanuel Velikovsky, his heterodox theories of human history and cosmic evolution, and the firestorm of protest they elicited from the scientific community—Michael Gordin offers us a roadmap of the modern fringe. Scouring extraordinary sources with his keen analytic eye, Gordin reveals the roots of today's pseudoscience wars. Engrossing and illuminating.”

(David Kaiser, author of How the Hippies Saved Physics: Science, Counterculture, and the Quantum Revival)

"Gordin . . . is remarkably evenhanded. . . . This won't put an end to the debates that rage between legitimate scientific research and other fringe doctrines, but it does lay the Velikovsky affair to rest with fairness and clarity and will help to put into perspective many of the controversies swirling around today's scientific landscape. A good read for those interested in the history of science or pseudoscientific theories."

(Library Journal)

“Those who are interested in how bad ideas start, how they diffuse, how they covet and resist confrontation, and how they wax and wane in popularity over time will find much food for thought in this gripping book.”

(Science)

"Scholarly and highly readable. . . . Gordin's historical analysis of pseudoscience remains disturbingly relevant." (Nature)

"A slyly funny writer. . . . Make no mistake:Gordin's sympathies are not with the occult. His fascination with pseudoscience is more like a negative method: the experts define the boundaries of their domain by fending off the quacks. For Gordin, pseudoscience is an instrument by which he takes the temperature of the past. . . . . The Pseudoscience Wars is a relatively slim volume, but Gordin siphons into it an overwhelming amount of information." (New Republic)

Important book putting the affair into a cultural perspective
By J. Hundley
Not unlike a couple of others here, I came into this book, based upon the title and subtitle, expecting something a bit different. What I got is soemthing better. This is not a rehash of Velikovsky's ideas and the debunking or promotion of them, but rather a serious, widely-researched attempt to place the whole "Velikovsky Affair" into an historical and social perspective.

Expressing no overt opinion of IV's ideas or the speculations behind them, Gordin instead places them in their contemporary setting and examines how and why they provoked the types of responses they did. He presents only a thumbnail biographical sketch of IV, focusing on his background and the events of his life only as they pertain to the development of his ideas and how they color his (IV's) reactions to the reactions his books produced. He then follows how those reactions changed over time, both within and without established, academic science and the larger world.

Gordin uses Velikovsky as a template of a sort for the reception of, and reaction to, other ideas and ideologies that have arisen in the past 60 or so years and shows how Velikovsky's supporters and critics have influenced the examination of those other ideas. This is really a fascinating read.

And it is also a very good read. Gordin's writing is scholarly without being at all obscure and his straightforward, matter-of-fact prose serves his purpose here very well. His subject is interesting and engaging; his style doesn't have to be.

This is, I think, an important book for those interested in the history and culture of science in specific, and ideas in general, particularly in the ways that serious academics act and react to popular and populist ideas that claim to contradict or attack their work. Highly recommended here.

Velikovsky: Scientist or fantasist?
By SInohey
This is one of a few books that give Velikovsky a fair shake. Although not a supporter of Velikovsky's theories, Professor Gordin treats his subject with the evenhanded analysis of a dispassionate science historian. The out-of-this-world (literally and figuratively) theories of Velikovsky - about the cosmos, formation of the planet, electromagnetic celestial mechanics and the effects of planetary genesis and orbits on human history, as described in many various ancient myths - are expressed in the book without derisive criticism.
Immanuel Velikovsky (1895-1979) was a Russian born Jewish psychiatrist who established a practice of psychiatry and Freudian psychoanalysis in Palestine from 1924 to 1939. He published several papers in medical journals, in which he was first to suggest that specific changes in EEG (electroencephalogram) were diagnostic of epilepsy.

Although an admirer of Freud, Velikovsky set out to disprove the latter's claim, that Moses was a follower of the Pharaoh Akhenaton or Pharaoh himself, as Freud suggested in "Moses and Monotheism". Velikovsky postulated the theory that Akhenaten was the model for Oedipus in Greek mythology. This began a second career of research and writings in archeology, biblical investigation, and cosmology in which Velikovsky tried to change the accepted chronology of ancient Egyptian kings and dynasties by interpreting or misinterpreting ancient documents (Eg: the Ipuwer papyrus, Mesopotamian cuneiforms etc).
In 1939, Velikovsky travelled to New York, ostensibly to do research for his planned book "Oedipus and Akhenaton" but remained permanently in the USA after the WW ll broke out. He eventually ended up in Princeton, New Jersey, where he became acquainted with Albert Einstein with whom he authored a two volume scientific treatise "Scripta Universitatis Atque Bibliothecae Hierosolymitanum" that became a foundation for the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Velikovsky's early work gave him credence in the scientific community but when he drifted to the far reaches of accepted dogma he was ostracized by most main stream scientists. This began with his pamphlets "Cosmos without Gravitation" and "Theses for the reconstruction of ancient history" that he self-published in 1945 and distributed to universities and scientists. His 1950 opus the "Worlds in Collision" placed him irretrievably in the "catastrophists" camp. Einstein distanced himself from Velikovsky and Harvard astronomer Harlow Shapley mounted a campaign to prevent publication of the book by the academic press. It was eventually published by Double Day and became a national best seller. This was followed by "Ages in Chaos" (1952) and "Earth in Upheaval"(1955), "Peoples of the Sea" (1977), "Rameses ll and his time" (1978) and "Grave diggers and Star gazers" published humorously (1983).
Astrophysicist Carl Sagan (1934-1996) criticized Velikovsky in his book "Broca's Brain: Reflections on the Romance of Science (1977) and debunked pseudo-science in his best seller "The Demon-Haunted world" which he co-authored with Ann Druyan in 1997.

Stephen Jay Gould (1941-2002), the brilliant scientist polymath said it best : "Velikovsky is neither a crank nor charlatan...he is at least gloriously wrong.... Velikovsky would rebuild the science of celestial mechanics to save the literal accuracy of ancient legends" (paraphrased).

Gordin writes:"The more successful science becomes, the more outsiders will want to participate in the process" and explains the concept of the "demarcation problem" in science (Karl Popper 1920) "Scientists will always demarcate, beause part of what science is..is an exclusion of some domains as irrelevant, rejected, outdated or incorrect".

The danger of pseudo-science, as expounded by fringe so-called scholars and some established academics, is the negative effect it has on the credulity of the non-scientifically educated majority of the population and its impact on society and its future viz. "Lysenkoinism, creationism, flood geology, global warming denial etc.."

However, we should be careful not to reject new ideas or theories simply because they challenge the status quo. Velikovsky's entire body of work should not be dismissed off-hand because many of his ideas contradict physical and geological realities; presently serious work is being conducted into revising the chronology of the dynasties and pharaohs and so-called "dark period" of the ancient cultures. Throwing the baby with the water is contradictory to investigative science - a good primer on the subject is Thomas Kuhn's "The structure of Scientific Revolutions".

The debate continues to this day as shown by the arguments of Ellenberger (erstwhile disciple and now critic of Velikovsky) and Greenberg (friend, defender and supporter of Velikovsky and his ideas) in the "Comments" section of the reviews.

A fascinating look at demarcation "in practice"
By Daniel Hicks
I'm a philosopher of science, and I read this book with the History and Philosophy of Science Reading Group at the University of Notre Dame in Spring 2013. My assessment of the book is thoroughly positive, and I believe most of the other participants would agree. It is an engaging and fascinating narrative, easy to read through for pleasure, but still having enough depth and scholarly engagement for hard-nosed academics. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who enjoys reading about science (and its counterpart, pseudoscience).

Philosophically, Gordin's book is extremely interesting for its approach to (what we philosophers call) the "demarcation problem." How do you distinguish -- demarcate -- that activity we call science from non-scientific pretenders? Common examples in the second category include alchemy, astrology, phrenology (studying the shape of skulls), creation science, and science under the Nazi regime and Lysenko in the Soviet Union. More controversial or difficult cases include Freudian psychology, Marxism, and evolution by natural selection ("Darwinism").

A classic attempted solution to this problem is from the Austrian-British philosopher Karl Popper. Popper said that "falsifiability" was the crucial feature: If your hypothesis makes predictions that can be empirically refuted, then (and only then) is it science. Even today, scientists offer this solution when creation science (and intelligent design, a descendent better adapted to our regulatory environment) rears its head. But contemporary philosophers of science generally agree that refutation isn't as clear-cut as Poppers solution assumes. You might remember an announcement from some European scientists in the summer of 2011 that they had measured some neutrinos traveling faster than the speed of light. But Einstein's theories of relativity are built on the assumption that the speed of light is absolute -- nothing can travel faster. So Einstein would seem to have been refuted. Actually, no: the community of physicists poured over the data and experimental setup, eventually concluding that there were errors in the calculation. In other words, Einstein's theories were protected from empirical refutation, at least in this case. By Popper's lights, this would have made these theories unfalsifiable, and hence pseudoscience. But of course they're not pseudoscience. Popper's criterion won't work; it's simply too simple.

Since recognizing this problem, other philosophers have attempted to develop other solutions. All have been found wanting. Gordin is quite clear from the outset that he doesn't think these efforts will succeed. So if we want to understand how science and pseudoscience are separate, we need to look at the ways that scientists themselves socially marginalize pseudoscientists: writing critical essays, keeping their books from being published, excluding them from conferences, firing their supporters, and so on. Gordin's primary narrative deals with Imanuel Velikovsky, a psychoanalyst who argued -- among many outlandish things -- that Venus was a comet from Jupiter that had nearly collided with the Earth, and that this explained many of the supernatural-sounding events of Exodus. Gordin also incorporates side-narratives, presenting other pseudosciences as similar cases, such as Lysenkoism, eugenics, and Young-Earth creationism.

The result, overall, is an engaging tour of the margins of twentieth century science, with enough scholarly substance to keep a roomful of philosophers and historians busy for several weeks. Gordin's book has my highest recommendation for both popular and academic readers.

Edit 2013-03-10: Fixed a typo pointed out by an astute reader.

From the Inside Flap
Preface

For the past half century many introductory differential equations courses for science and engineering students have emphasized the formal solution of standard types of differential equations using a (seeming) grab-bag of mechanical solution techniques. The evolution of the present text is based on experience teaching a new course with a greater emphasis on conceptual ideas and the use of computer lab projects to involve students in more intense and sustained problem-solving experiences. Both the conceptual and the computational aspects of such a course depend heavily on the perspective and techniques of linear algebra. Consequently, the study of differential equations and linear algebra in tandem reinforces the learning of both subjects. In this book we have therefore combined core topics in elementary differential equations with those concepts and methods of elementary linear algebra that are needed for a contemporary introduction to differential equations.

The availability of technical computing environments like Maple, Mathematica, and MATLAB is reshaping the current role and applications of differential equations in science and engineering, and has shaped our approach in this text. New technology motivates a shift in emphasis from traditional manual methods to both qualitative and computer-based methods that

render accessible a wider range of more realistic applications; permit the use of both numerical computation and graphical visualization to develop greater conceptual understanding; and encourage empirical investigations that involve deeper thought and analysis than standard textbook problems. Major Features

The following features of this text are intended to support a contemporary differential equations course with linear algebra that augments traditional core skills with conceptual perspectives:

The organization of the book emphasizes linear systems of algebraic and differential equations. Chapter 3 introduces matrices and determinants as needed for concrete computational purposes. Chapter 4 introduces vector spaces in preparation for understanding (in Chapter 5) the solution set of an nth order homogeneous linear differential equation as an n-dimensional vector space of functions, and for realizing that finding a general solution of the equation amounts to finding a basis for its solution space. (Students who proceed to a subsequent course in abstract linear algebra may benefit especially from this concrete prior experience with vector spaces.) Chapter 6 introduces eigenvalues and eigenvectors in preparation for solving linear systems of differential equations in Chapters 7 and 8. In Chapter 8 we may go a bit further than usual with the computation of matrix exponentials. These linear tools are applied to the analysis of nonlinear systems and phenomena in Chapter 9. We have trimmed the coverage of certain seldom-used topics and added new topics in order to place throughout a greater emphasis on core techniques as well as qualitative aspects of the subject associated with direction fields, solution curves, phase plane portraits, and dynamical systems. To this end we combine symbolic, graphic, and numeric solution methods wherever it seems advantageous. A healthy computational flavor should be evident in figures, examples, problems, and projects throughout the text. Discussions and examples of the mathematical modeling of real-world phenomena appear throughout the book. Students learn through modeling and empirical investigation to balance the questions of what equation to formulate, how to solve it, and whether a solution will yield useful information. Students also need to understand the role of existence and uniqueness theorems in the subject. While it may not be feasible to include proofs of these fundamental theorems along the way in a elementary course, students need to see precise and clear-cut statements of these theorems. We include appropriate existence and uniqueness proofs in the appendices, and occasionally refer to them in the main body of the text. Computer methods for the solution of differential equations and linear systems of equations are now common, but we continue to believe that students need to learn certain analytical methods of solution (as in Chapters 1 and 5). One reason is that effective and reliable use of numerical methods often requires preliminary analysis using standard elementary techniques; the construction of a realistic numerical model often is based on the study of a simpler analytical model. We therefore continue to stress the mastery of traditional solution techniques (especially through the inclusion of extensive problem sets). Computational Flavor

The following features highlight the computational flavor that distinguishes much of our exposition.

About 250 computer-generated graphics—over half of them new for this version of the text, and most constructed using MATLAB—show students vivid pictures of direction fields, solution curves, and phase plane portraits that bring symbolic solutions of differential equations to life. Over 30 computing projects follow key sections throughout the text. These "technology neutral" project sections illustrate the use of computer algebra systems like Maple, Mathematica, and MATLAB, and seek to actively engage students in the application of new technology. A fresh numerical emphasis that is afforded by the early introduction of numerical solution techniques in Chapter 2 (on mathematical models and numerical methods). Here and in Section 7.6, where numerical techniques for systems are treated, a concrete and tangible flavor is achieved by the inclusion of numerical algorithms presented in parallel fashion for systems ranging from graphing calculators to MATLAB. A conceptual perspective shaped by the availability of computational aids, which permits a leaner and more streamlined coverage of certain traditional manual topics (like exact equations and variation of parameters) in Chapters 1 and 5. Applications

To sample the range of applications in this text, take a look at the following questions:

What explains the commonly observed time lag between indoor and outdoor daily temperature oscillations? (Section 1.5) What makes the difference between doomsday and extinction in alligator populations? (Section 2.1) How do a unicycle and a two-axle car react differently to road bumps? (Sections 5.6 and 7.4) Why might an earthquake demolish one building and leave standing the one next door? (Section 7.4) Why might an eartquake demolish one building and leave standing the one next door? (Section 7.4) How can you predict the time of next perihelion passage of a newly observed comet? (Section 7.6) What determines whether two species will live harmoniously together, or whether competition will result in the extinction of one of them and the survival of the other? (Section 9.3) Organization and Content

The organization and content of the book may be outlined as follows:

After a precis of first-order equations in Chapter 1—with a somewhat stream-lined coverage of certain traditional symbolic methods—Chapter 2 offers an early introduction to mathematical modeling, stability and qualitative properties of differential equations, and numerical methods. This is a combination of topics that ordinarily are dispersed later in an introductory course. Chapters 3 (Linear Systems and Matrices), 4 (Vector Spaces), and 6 (Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors) provide concrete and self-contained coverage of the elementary linear algebra concepts and techniques that are needed for the solution of linear differential equations and systems. Chapter 6 concludes with applications of diagonizable matrices and a proof of the Cayley-Hamilton theorem for such matrices. Chapter 5 exploits the linear algebra of Chapters 3 and 4 to present efficiently the theory and solution of single linear differential equations. Chapter 7 is based on the eigenvalue approach to linear systems, and includes (in Section 7.5) the Jordan normal form for matrices and its application to the general Cayley-Hamilton theorem. This chapter includes an unusual number of applications (ranging from railway cars to earthquakes) of the various cases of the eigenvalue method, and concludes in Section 7.6 with numerical methods for systems. Chapter 8 is devoted to matrix exponentials with applications to linear systems of differential equations. The spectral decomposition method of Section 8.3 offers students an especially concrete approach to the computation of matrix exponentials. Our treatment of this material owes much to advice and course notes provided by Professor Dar-Veig Ho of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Chapter 9 exploits linear methods for the investigation of nonlinear systems and phenomena, and ranges from phase plane analysis to applications involving ecological and mechanical systems. Chapters 10 treats Laplace transform methods for the solution of constant-coefficient linear differential equations with a goal of handling the piecewise continuous and periodic forcing functions that are common in engineering applications. Chapter 11 treats power series methods with a goal of discussing Bessel's equation with sufficient detail for the most common elementary applications. Problems, Projects, and the Web Site

About 300 of the text's over 2000 problems are new for this book; the older problems are retained either from Edwards & Penney, Differential Equations: Computing and Modeling (Prentice Hall, 2000) or from our Elementary Linear Algebra (Prentice Hall, 1988). Each section contains a wide variety of computational exercises plus an ample number of applied or conceptual problems.

The answer section includes the answers to most odd-numbered problems and to some of the even-numbered ones. The Student Solutions Manual accompanying this book provides worked-out solutions for most of the odd-numbered problems in the book, while the Instructor's Solutions Manual provides solutions for most of the even-numbered problems as well.

The approximately 30 project sections in the text contain much additional and extended problem material designed to engage students in the exploration and application of computational technology. Most of these projects are expanded considerably in the Computing Projects Manual that accompanies the text and supplements it with additional and sometimes more challenging investigations. Each project section in this manual has parallel Using Maple, Using Mathematics, and Using MATLAB subsections that detail the applicable methods and techniques of each system, and will afford student users an opportunity to compare the merits and styles of different computational systems.

Students can download project notebooks and worksheets from the Web site prenhall/edwards/ode, where a variety of additional supporting materials ranging from reading quizzes to interactive examples and phase plane plotters are provided. Acknowledgments

About the Author
C. Henry Edwards is emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of Georgia. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee in 1960, and recently retired after 40 years of classroom teaching (including calculus or differential equations almost every term) at the universities of Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Georgia, with a brief interlude at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) as an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow. He has received numerous teaching awards, including the University of Georgia's "honoratus "medal in 1983 (for sustained excellence in honors teaching), its Josiah Meigs award in 1991 (the institution's highest award for teaching), and the 1997 statewide Georgia Regents award for research university faculty teaching excellence. His scholarly career has ranged from research and dissertation direction in topology to the history of mathematics to computing and technology in the teaching and applications of mathematics. In addition to being author or co-author of calculus, advanced calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations textbooks, he is well-known to calculus instructors as author of "The Historical Development of the Calculus "(Springer-Verlag, 1979). During the 1990s, he served as a principal investigator on three NSF-supported projects: (1) A school mathematics project including Maple for beginning algebra students, (2) A Calculus-with-"Mathematica "program, and (3) A MATLAB-based computer lab project for numerical analysis and differential equations students. David E. Penney, University of Georgia, completed his Ph.D. at Tulane University in 1965 (under the direction of Prof. L. Bruce Treybig) while teaching at the University of New Orleans.Earlier he had worked in experimental biophysics at Tulane University and the Veteran's Administration Hospital in New Orleans under the direction of Robert Dixon McAfee, where Dr. McAfee's research team's primary focus was on the active transport of sodium ions by biological membranes. Penney's primary contribution here was the development of a mathematical model (using simultaneous ordinary differential equations) for the metabolic phenomena regulating such transport, with potential future applications in kidney physiology, management of hypertension, and treatment of congestive heart failure. He also designed and constructed servomechanisms for the accurate monitoring of ion transport, a phenomenon involving the measurement of potentials in microvolts at impedances of millions of megohms. Penney began teaching calculus at Tulane in 1957 and taught that course almost every term with enthusiasm and distinction until his retirement at the end of the last millennium. During his tenure at the University of Georgia, he received numerous University-wide teaching awards as well as directing several doctoral dissertations and seven undergraduate research projects. He is the author or co-author of textbooks on calculus, computer programming, differential equations, linear algebra, and liberal arts mathematics.

Not perfect, but I was able to learn from it
By D. Chen
I don't know why the reviews on this are so harsh...

I'm a Junior engineering student, and I pretty much hate every textbook I've ever had to purchase for my major. I was actually pleasantly surprised by this Diff. Equations book. Granted it still is a math textbook, so following it is sometimes hard, but the examples given in the book are very helpful, and I was able to do almost all the required homework by working through stuff in the book. My lecturer wasn't the greatest so I was able to get an A in the class with the majority of learning coming from the book. I was annoyed that some of the homework problems seemed to come out of the blue with no similar example in the book, but ah well. I did have the solutions manual to help me out a bit with those (only the odd problems are solved in the solutions) and if it was an even problem, an odd problem before or after would be of similar make so I could find the general way to solve the problem anyway. Yup, not too bad, not perfect, but definitely not a two star book either.

Doesn't teach clearly at all
By Chad Anderson
This book was required for my differential equations and linear algebra class. The only problems are that the chapters don't explain anything clearly at all and the solutions manuals don't show solutions at all. The solutions manual only shows intermediate answers and skips all the nitty-gritty. Anyway it's not very useful. It turns out that the book is only worthwhile for the problems themselves.
