Amazon.com Review
A Letter from Author Josh Ritter © Marcelo Biglia The central premise of Bright’s Passage is that an angel has followed young Henry Bright home from the senseless carnage of the First World War. The book follows Bright during three significant periods in his life, braiding the scenes together finally to portray a young man attempting to meet the greatest challenge of his life: returning home. The angel, perhaps a capricious refugee from the painted ceiling of a shelled French church, perhaps the dream-like manifestation of Henry Bright’s own shell-shocked mind, nevertheless takes up residence in Henry’s horse, and it is through their time with one another and the journey they take together that Bright attempts to find peace, not simply for himself, but if the angel is correct, for the entire world. War always brims with bloody inscrutability, but the First World War mated the ferocious absurdity of human nature with unprecedented leaps of technological capability to birth a new and monstrous kind of world-striding warfare that for the first time in history seemed capable of wiping away whole civilizations. It was this conflict--the seeming ability of man to spin the world and yet just as easily be spun by it--that drew me to the time period surrounding the First World War, and that gave me my first glimpse of Henry Bright, a man caught up in a whirlwind he is unable to understand or control. Though continuously pestered by the angel, upon returning home to West Virginia Henry attempts to put the abattoir of his time in France behind him by marrying his childhood friend Rachel and having a baby with her. When Rachel dies in childbirth however, Henry finds himself beset by new and present vagaries even as he attempts to understand the ones he has already come through. A wildfire, Rachel’s vengeful family, and his struggle to protect his newborn son from both now drive Henry Bright, his horse, his goat and his tiny infant into the wilderness in a desperate attempt to finally find peace. Ultimately, Bright’s Passage is about a man who has come home from war only to suspect that perhaps he has not yet returned from it.

A different, strange novel.
By Kate
Another reviewer said that they were about halfway through the book before they really cared what happened. I sort of had a similar feeling. For the first few chapters I was asking myself "What is this? Why am I reading this? Where is this going?" And sometimes those are great things to be asking while you're reading. But in this case, I don't think it was necessarily a good thing. I thought that I had perhaps made a mistake in purchasing the book (which, of course, I did only because I'm a fan of Josh Ritter's music and I think his song writing skills are incredible.)

But somewhere over half of the way through, I suddenly realized that I had been fully sucked in. (I couldn't say where. I think it happened gradually.) The writing itself was interesting, beautiful, and thought-provoking in a way. The story, at some point, became captivating and certainly made me think.

At the end of the book, it had an interview with Josh Ritter and the interviewer commented on how one of his favorite things about Ritter's songwriting was that he had a way of allowing an audience to fill in their own story to the bits of a story that he provides in the song. The interviewer said that he didn't think that Ritter would be able to apply that trait of his writing/story telling to a novel, but that he somehow did. I really agree with that. The story isn't really open ended, but it lets you, as a reader, really add what you want to it (and not just in general things like the meaning/interpretation of the angel) in a way that makes it more enjoyable to experience.

Perhaps in that same interview, I also read a comment on Ritter's ability to observe and report on little details that make for really great, interesting moments in a story. I too noticed this all through out reading the book. He manages to add these little details that really bring you into what he is describing, but not to the point that you get bored.
It was also interesting to read that he spent a lot of time pouring through first-hand accounts of the war from other people and that a lot of these moments came from those books/stories/letters etc. With this book (and these little details that he provides) it's almost like Ritter serves as a translator to bring us these interesting (and often times disturbing) moments if we don't care to pour through all those accounts of WWI ourselves.

In particular I remember this passage: "They entered the War like men stepping out from beneath an awning into a torrential thunderstorm. The first man that Bright saw die fell back down into the very trench from which he'd just climbed. His uniform was still fresh and the tops of his boots had been shined. Only the soles looked muddy."
The book is full of little paragraphs like that - mentioned almost in passing, but hard to shake and very meaningful.

I initially gave this book a three. I had read it very quickly and I guess still had that lingering feeling of not being too sure about it in the beginning. After a couple days of not being able to stop thinking about it, I realized that I had to bump it up to at least a four. I really liked it and can't wait for his next novel.

It's an odd mix of realism/historical fiction and fantastical fable or folk tale, but for me that really worked.

“The cruelty I’ve seen is beyond my understanding”
By B. Wilfong
“Bright’s Passage” is a short, quick read of a novel that at times is so lyrical you can hear the music underscoring it. That is no surprise since its author is Josh Ritter a singer/songwriter whose work I have a fleeting familiarity with. However, the novel has a strength in being written by a songwriter as there are numerous times in the text when there are lines that are packed with layers of meaning, like the best poetry.
The novel takes place in West Virginia immediately following WW I, and it is structured so that the chapters alternate between the present moment and two distinct past events. In this manner the gaps and unexplained elements of the “present tense” chapters are slowly explained and filled in. It is an effective device, complimented by the short chapters which keep the writing and pace of the novel fluid and quick.
Without giving too much away I will say that as a writer Ritter is quite talented, as a person who develops plots that propel the reader along, not so much. What kept me the most engaged, besides the writing style, was the ambiguous nature of the text. It is hard to categorize and it can easily be placed in a few different genres, depending on your interpretation. That ambiguity is a joy of the book.
“Bright’s Passage” is a text that holds up under scrutiny and I think it would be an excellent choice for book clubs as it touches upon a lot of good topics of discussion. All told I’m not dying for another novel by Mr. Ritter, but I would certainly not ignore it if he produced another.

This is a song that went on waay too long...
By Mojo_green
My friends and family know me as one of the most die-hard Josh Ritter fans around. Honestly, I was beyond thrilled when I heard he was writing a book. I expected to love it, hands down.

Josh's writing style is excellent. His thematic ideas, his similes and metaphors-- this book can be breathtaking in places (read just the first chapter, and you'll see...) However, my problem is when you stand back and take a look at the book and the plot as a whole, it is utterly ridiculous. I understand that Ritter is trying to create some kind of fable here- a story that the old folk in the mountains of Appalachia passed down orally from one generation to the next. I see that as what he was shooting for. But when you pair that with his flare for the stylistic, it doesn't work. There are no erudite fairy tales.

Honestly, I think he can write something compelling. He could be Phillip Roth if he takes a deep breath, stands back, and takes some time with his next book. Choose a realistic plot, and find the magic in the mundane, in the everyday 'spaces between' people and things.

This book, Bright's Passage, probably would have been another 5-star Josh Ritter SONG, but as books go, it gets a regrettable 'skip it' from this Josh Ritter devotee.

Good for newbies to NAS networking systems
By Jeffrey Osborn
For a beginner, this is a good start. For someone who is about to set up a new Synology unit for the 1st time and who is not familiar with networking operating systems, I would recommend this book.

Unfortunately, if you have already installed the OS following the provided instructions, you will know too much for this book to advance your knowledge. It is not a reference book. I was disappointed to find that the page count is irrelevant as quite a number of the pages are only one paragraph long.

I gave it 3 stars because for someone with no understanding of networking, this is a smooth start to get you going.

On the up side, I would purchase another book by the author if he went into depth on the OS.

For the price not a bad read
By Amazon Customer
Not enough info on the things that really count and matter and to much info on things that very few people would need or use. Found the screen shots quality was poor and difficult to read . But hey the author did try and I think for the price not a bad read.

Excellent Guide for IT Do-It-Yourselfers
By Carol B.
Excellent guide for those of us who are do-it-yourselfers with no IT support staff. Mr. Rushton provides step-by-step guidance for selecting RAID level and installing and configuring DSM. The book contains enough information about networking for a person with general computer knowledge to understand and follow the connectivity steps and security options.

This eBook contains 178 illustrations - primarily screen captures - that make the guide very easy to follow. However, the illustrations weren't very clear on my Kindle Paperwhite. The author recognizes the potential for that problem. The book's Intro contains an email address to contact the author. With proof of purchase from Amazon, he will email a PDF file containing all the illustrations that are crisp, clear, and easy to see. I submitted a request late on a Friday night and received the PDF in less than 2 hours.

The "Synology NAS Setup Guide" is exactly what I needed to feel confident enough to install two Synology DiskStations.

From the Publisher
The late Lester del Rey had a theory about the biological seat of Deryni power, a theory that he could have related in astonishing specificity. I just remember that he said it must come from somewhere in the nose, something related to the olfactory senses. I always thought that wa snot a very glamourous way to look at an exciting, epic sweep of fantasy. But after all, magic has to come from somewhere.

One of My Personal Favorites
By Rodney Meek
Maybe it's a generational thing, like one of those events with which only people of a certain age can identify. For instance, I can't understand the fascination that some have for Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Elvis Presley. It's the same thing with some fantasy works: some will make people fervent followers, others will leave people cold. I rather suspect that some of the books I read in my youth would seem substandard were I to read them for the first time now. This is by way of saying that maybe I was a far more impressionable lad back in the day. Be that as it may, I first read the original Deryni trilogy back when I was in high school, and it definitely had a major impact on how I came to view subsequent fantasy works. I rate these books, along with Stephen Donaldson's Thomas Covenant series, as my favorite fantasy books by far.
What's not to like in this first trilogy? Kurtz creates a vivid, living land, essentially an alternate medieval Europe with substantially altered geography and dynasties. You quickly get a sense that this is a intricate world with a rich depth of history. The setting, since it draws on our popular conceptions of the Middle Ages, seems familiar enough that you can easily picture the castles and cathedrals and towns, yet different enough that your imagination can be given free reign to fill in the details.
The people, too, are excellently depicted, from high to low. Few are unalloyed heroes or villains; they all have their flaws and virtues, their hidden secrets and desires and fears. None of them are able to move efforlessly from triumph to triumph; sometimes they stumble, make mistakes, fall into traps. Other than the Deryni themselves, few can call upon huge stores of magic, or charge headlong into battle with mightily enchanted items. An arrow to the chest is as likely to kill the greatest warrior as the meanest footsoldier. And make no mistake, people will die in these books--divine force will not intervene to save them, and they're not going to come back from the grave. (Well, except maybe for one exception.)
Kurtz excels at bringing her cast of characters to life. Many of them are so well drawn that it's a real disappointment to think that their lives are merely fictional. You'll hate to see their adventures come to an end. Even characters that start out as minor figures can climb to prominence and become more developed over the course of the series.
This first trilogy helped popularize the "alternate Europe" setting with the Catholic Church as a major element. The Church does not come off too well here, as most of its hierarchy is composed of fanatics, slick political operators, and bigots. This theme has been picked up in other works inspired by the Deryni books (such as some of the novels by the overly-prolific Mercedes Lackey). While it works here as an integral part of the milieu and history, in books written by others, the Church as villain is generally done quite poorly. But I digress.
This first Deryni trilogy is epic in scope, filled with intrigue, battles, mysterious rites, strange encounters, passion, love, and death. Multiple plot lines are followed and many points of view are presented. It is truly a sweeping and engripping epic.
The following trilogy, centered on Camber, a figure from a few centuries prior to the original books, is almost as good. After that, Kurtz begins to churn out Deryni books that suffer from improbable plots, silly and uninspired characters, and a certain numbing sameness. They read almost as if a lesser talent had created them under her vague supervision.
But you won't be disappointed with this first set. Unless, as I said, only oldsters like me can identify with this. You kids and your Robert Jordan these days, sheesh...

Deryni Forever!
By Stephanie G. Barrett
I read this book years ago and lost it when we arranged furniture. So I bought it again. I love the story about Prince Kelson and Alaric Morgan, the deryni. I have read all the books she has written on the Deryni and will read any more she might write.

A novel with a good deal of intrigue
By Benjamin D. Comings
A novel with a good deal of intrigue, magic and ritual. Kurtz likes describing what the various characters are wearing in detail.

The slave of demented Gods, Sacha knew only a life of anguish and suffering until she was reborn as a Guardian of the Realms. Gifted with immense strength and rare abilities, she has spent thousands of years battling to protect the four Realms with her Guardian family. Time has allowed her to construct the perfect mask of calm and control so none can see the past shame and immense pain buried in the darkest recesses of her mind. Now, an encounter with a new and powerful enemy has left Sacha the victim of a poison induced coma that all are unable to heal. The last thing anyone imagines waking her is a God with the strength and potential to unravel her entire world.

As the most powerful of the Gods, Hades was awakened from the Creators’ enforced sleep to help the Guardians in their quest to find his heinous brother, Apollo. After a brutal battle with an unknown Goddess leaves him in need of healing he finds himself powerfully drawn into the room of a sleeping seductress. Her soul calls to him relentlessly, but if he surrenders himself to that connection and gives her the strength to heal, life as he knows it will end.

With their worlds unraveling and new threats at every turn will Sacha’s past destroy them? Or will she bring a God to his knees and lead them both into Divine Ecstasy.

Review
"This series just gets better and better. Brilliant job!!" - Shani, PBC

About the Author
Setta Jay is the author of the popular Guardians of the Realms Series. She's garnered attention and rave reviews in the paranormal romance world for writing smart, slightly innocent heroines and intense alpha males. She loves writing stories that incorporate a strong plot with a heavy dose of heat. Her influences include Judith McNaught who she feels writes a smart heroine to perfection, Gena Showalter, Maya Banks and Lora Leigh. You can often find her writing compared to JR Ward, but if you are a fan of the Black Dagger Brotherhood be warned that Setta Jay's novels are more erotic in nature. Born a California girl, she currently resides in Idaho with her husband of ten plus years who she describes as incredibly sexy and supportive. She loves to hear from readers so feel free to ask her questions on social media or send her an email, she will happily reply. Opps I think she did it again! Loved it!
By bookaholic ge
I received this book as an ARC from Net Galley for my honest review and I loved it!!!

I loved every second and every word of this book. I usually go into this big thing describing the book but I want to get tot he meat and potatoes!

Sasha has lived a hard life...she has suffered in ways that are unimaginable to help her family. You would think her struggles are over but she gets hurt protecting her friends only to be awakened by a man who represents all of the things that hurt her in the past. One would think that she would run away but she doesn't...she stands tall and takes a chance...on love... on life...on finally living for herself and what she wants for once.

Hades was such a jerk in the previous books but in this one he is the MAN. Imagine the most selfish person putting all of that energy into the woman he loves... its like he goes from the most selfish man to the most selfless man in the world!

This is honestly a beautiful book packed with passion, love, action, and suspense. This book is selling right now for 3.99 on Kindle Amazon and I think it could sell for soooo much more so get it before they realize they could sell this for more! Great Job Setta!

Review: Divine Ecstasy ~ It's worth reading! One of my favorite series.
By Angela @ Angel's Guilty Pleasures
~ 3.5 Divine Ecstasy Stars ~

Divine Ecstasy is book eight in the Guardians of the Realms series by Setta Jay. This series has fast become one of my favorites. I love the Guardians, the world and characters dreamed up in this spicy series.

Divine Ecstasy was not as jaw-dropping or plot oriented as previous installments. The book focuses around Sacha and Hades, with just small glimpses of what might happen in the future books. We don’t get to see many battles in this story, we end on a cliffhanger and we get to find out who’s book is next.

What I Liked:

Sacha, she is one of three female Guardians. This is the fist full length book devoted to one of the female Guardians. We all know (from reading previous books) that she kept to herself, but we don’t no the full reasons why. Here we finally get to find out why. I also loved her tenacity and determination to not let the bad memories torment her. She is a one strong tough female. Watching her grow and let her mate Hades in, was sweet to read.

Hades is a powerful God who was awakened from the Creator’s enforced sleep. He is scrumptious, thoughtful, sweet and dominant. I loved that he had to take baby steps and show his mate Sacha that he is not like all the others who hurt her. I also loved how he was so sensitive with Sacha’s needs as she battled with her memories. He was there for her and supportive.

We have a totally different kind of mating. It doesn’t take the usual course as all the previous ones before it, this has to do with how the bonding was done and that a God is in the mix.

What I Didn’t Like:

I really missed the battles. This one was not as action-packed as I have come to enjoy from the series.

We get glimpses of Thurl and it's people, but felt like we where not getting enough information on this new mythical land. I felt like we needed more then what we where given.

This novel ends on a cliffhanger. I'm not a fan of cliffhangers. I will say the cliffhanger for this novel does work. Making the reader stop and think what might be next for these Guardians.

I enjoyed this novel and even though Divine Ecstasy was not my favorite. It is still well worth reading. We get a few surprises and developments that make you stop and think as well as our first full novel devoted to one of the female Guardians. I am looking forward to seeing what is in-store for everyone, because something big is coming.

*Disclaimer: I purchased this book for my own consumption and I also received a complementary ARC copy provided by Setta Jay with the sole purpose of an honest review. All thoughts, comments and ratings are my own.

I HAVE A NEW BOOK BOYFRIEND...AND HIS NAME IS HADES!
By Marie Brown
Marie's Tempting Reads ARC Review:

Outstandingly delectable and seriously H-O-T, Divine Ecstasy blew me away in THE MOST PASSIONATE WAY IMAGINABLE! I now have a BRAND SPANKING NEW BOOK BOYFRIEND...AND HIS NAME IS HADES!! I honestly don't know how Setta Jay does it, but she did an absolute AMAZING job with Divine Ecstasy. Her writing is hands down sexy, fun, and beyond addicting. I can't even find a word that would do justice to how I feel when I read A Guardian of The Realms story. And to say this one may have topped it as of yet, is putting it mildly. Hades is definitely the most thoughtful, sweet, hunky, and dominant of the guardians...and the best part is he is a GOD! I loved how he was so sensitive with Sacha's needs as she battled with her memories. He was there for her and supported her and was just SO. GOOD. With her. Sacha was a total surprise as well. I knew from reading about her in previous stories, that she kept to herself, but to find out the reasons why behind it, stunned me. Yet I was incredibly proud and amazed at her tenacity and determination to not let the bad memories assail her. When she realizes that the God, Hades, is her mate, she takes things by the horn and knows that she needs to complete the bond. The fact that Hades turned out to be seductive, gentle, and patient was a real treat.

I enjoyed how we didn't see many battles in this story (even though the battles are terrible and incredible at the same time). Everything pretty much settled around Sacha and Hades. With just small glimpses of what will happen in future books. And the ending, HOLY COW, was THAT AWESOME! I now know who is next in line for a story and I CAN'T FREAKING WAIT! Setta Jay's stories does that to me. EVERY TIME. She makes me eager and anxious and excited for the next book, and I just don't see that stopping ANYTIME soon.

Divine Ecstasy gets a SCORCHING FIVE SHOOTING STARS! This deserved a ten, but that pesky rule about no more than five stars just gets in the way. This is a wicked, delicious, sensual assault on a readers senses. I. WANT. MORE. RIGHT. NOW.

Excellent Historic Design Reference Book
By A Customer
I am an artist blacksmith doing architectural work. I use this book frequently to help with authentic design. It is filled with many good photographs and drawings. The text is helpful for anyone desiring to know more about how and why the fine ironwork of the past came to be.

This book was intended for an art student
By A Customer
I was some what dissapointed with this book because I found the author too worried about filling text rather than getting to the point. I am a welder and really was looking for a book that discussed reasons, good examples, and how to create wrought iron design. I was not looking for a history lesson. If you are looking for history on the art of Spanish, Italian design etc. and where they were used, this would be the book for you.
