About the Author
Seamus Heaney was born in County Derry in Northern Ireland. Death of a Naturalist, his first collection of poems, appeared in 1966 and since then he has published poetry, criticism and translations - including Beowulf (1999) - which have established him as one of the leading poets now at work. In 1995 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. District and Circle (2006) was awarded the T. S. Eliot Prize in 2006. Stepping Stones, a book of interviews conducted by Dennis O'Driscoll, appeared in 2008. In 2009 he received the David Cohen Prize for Literature.

Magnificent

"Sweeney Astray" is a masterpiece on many levels: for the complex weave of its themes to the lyrical quality of its prose--accentuated greatly, of course, by Seamus Heaney's virtuoso translation.
We follow mad Sweeney in his crazed wanderings through the forest and hills, torn within himself by his love of the wild and his incurable loneliness. The tale is presented as chunks of narrative interspersed with segments of poetry, their quiet, melancholy beauty evoking the sounds of windsong and rain.
There is an ethereal quality to this text that makes it difficult to describe. Although it would seem to have a storyline, in reality it is a song, and each "event" a new strain of music. Sweeney's longing for his lost life as a man and king, even as he is unable to stay away from his beloved wilds of Glen Bolcain, illustrate the conflict between the desire for peaceful conformity and for transcendence. This conflict is echoed in the struggle that was ensuing in Ireland even as this work was being written, the struggle between the Celtic religion and the new influx of Christianity.
In this way does "Sweeney Astray" illuminate a historic revolution, while at the same time presenting themes that span eternity.

Sweeney Hits Home

Heaney's translation of the ancient Irish poem 'Sweeney Astray' miraculously repaints the picture of the warrior king who loses all when he crosses the institutional church. The poem regains some of the magic of the older age and raises the questions of the relationship o church and state, war and spirituality, love and madness, existence and the wrath of God.

Well written - hard to find. I NEVER lend my copy for fear of losing it because I read it every few months

Here at last in a great English version is the Irish tale of Sweeney, the medieval Buile Suibhne. Sweeney is a local king who runs afoul of a cleric, Ronan Finn; he destroys Ronan’s psalter, kills one of his novices, and falls prey to Ronan’s curse, one of those utterances of “dark rending energy” of the legendary Irish temper. (Cleric, yes; mild-mannered, no.) Sweeney goes through a strange, avian transformation: “He was revolted by thought of known places / and dreamed of strange migrations…. / he levitated in a frantic and cumbersome motion / like a bird of the air.” From there Sweeney lives herded from place to place by his panics, hiding in trees and shrubs, living on watercress, “bird-brain among branches”—and gives utterance to poems, as Seamus Heaney says, “piercingly exposed to the beauties and severities of the natural world.” And as they accumulate the names of the actual Ireland Sweeney traverses—“From Galtee to Liffey / I was swept along and driven / through bitter twilight / to the slopes of Benn Bulben”—what happens is almost the opposite of the effect of Brendan’s voyages from a known Ireland to strange isles: Sweeney’s poems set a layer of strangeness and fantasy over the familiar map of Ireland. And while the Navigatio is a thorough Christian work, the Buile Suibhne is “in the grip of a tension between the newly dominant Christian ethos and the older, recalcitrant Celtic temperament.” However you want to read it—even, as Heaney says, as “a quarrel between free creative imagination and the constraints of religious, political and domestic obligation”—it’s a story that burrows down in and stays in your mind—roaring, pathetic and wind-chilled. Seamus Heaney’s great translation is called SWEENEY ASTRAY (Faber, 1984) and it ranks with the best work of this gifted and prolific poet.

A great approach to understanding Jiujitsu when you're stuck

Being a BJJ Blue Belt I've read several books on grappling, most of which focus on a collection of techniques and maybe some drills to improve your game. Those can be useful but often become books loaded with a handful of techniques you might practice out of dozens presented. The Blackbelt Blueprint is fantastic because it doesn't focus at all on the technique part of Jiujitsu. Instead it talks all about core principal inside of Jiujitsu, that often take years of practice before someone becomes aware of them.

Coming from a school that focuses on old school 90's Jiujitsu and self defense this book was right in line with my teacher's philosophy of understanding WHY Jiujitsu works not just how to do it. Often I see lower belts get stuck, as I used to and still do, in particular positions or when hunting for a submission that is being defended by a strong opponent. Blackbelt Blueprint presents many principles that can be applied whatever the position may be.

Another great aspect to this book is all the material for off the mat training. This often gets lip service but Blackbelt Blueprint has an entire chapter dedicated to memorizing techniques, visualizing, planning training and working on improvements to Jiujitsu while not in class.

Whenever I find myself starting to plateau or feel like a went through a class of sparring with great difficulty I will skim through the book to remind myself of these basic principles, then mentally review what I did wrong. By going over these advanced basics I can find the holes in my own game and work back to what I did in the position, transition or submission that made it less effective. When working with white belts it's also improved my ability to teach because the concepts are presented in an easily digestible form with clear visuals thanks to the black vs. white chess style illustrations demonstrating a principle. I recommend the text to anyone who wants to improve their game on or off the mat. Both white and color belts can benefit from this text. For white belts it gives them direction while for colored belts it reminds the reader to remember their basics and train smarter than your average BJJ guy.

If you buy the digital version, a nice benefit are the number of youtube hyperlinks inside, so if you read it on your phone, Kindle or laptop you can see see Nicolas show a demonstration of the technique or concept broken down by the author. Something I haven't seen from other books on the art.

Overall I love the Blackbelt Blueprints ease of explaining why Jiujitsu works and find myself referencing it often on my phone after class. It's great piece to have on your shelf or in your pocket.

Improve Your Skills Faster Than You Ever Imagined

Nicolas Gregoriades is a true student of the martial way. He's dedicated his life to traveling the world to develop his skill and explore the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But even more important for the reader is the fact that he's put an equal amount of passion into developing his skill as a teacher, coach, and guide.

Nic doesn't take a judgmental or dogmatic approach, but instead shares with you what he's learned along the way by following a path most of us can't take. And he's brought back the hidden concepts and secret keys that will shave years off your own journey and improve your skills faster than you ever imagined.

This is one of my 'go to' guides when I feel stuck in my own game and I'm looking for answers. It's helped me out immensely.

Mediocre Book that is Overhyped and Overpriced!

This book serves as a decent primer for those of you just starting out in Brazilian jujitsu. The reason why I gave this book 2 stars is because based on the actual content, nothing is particularly earth shattering or ground breaking. The advice that Nicholas offers really is just basic commonsense advice any dedicated jujitsu follower will naturally figure out for themselves. If you have been training for more than a few months, and don't have a learning disability, everything in this book is just regurgitated information.

Nicholas has a very spiritual and conceptual approach to jujitsu that I do appreciate. He has obviously been influenced by some of the principle of Bruce Lee's, Jeet Kune Do. He also is a big advocate of incorporating yoga into your jujitsu training as a way of balancing out your body (something that I whole heartedly agree with). However, the content combined with the price, does not in my opinion warrant this book 5 stars. If anything, I will say what is worthy of 5 stars is the marketing surrounding this book. Nicolas has done a good job in promoting himself as some type of a BJJ guru, and that the keys to his wisdom are in this book. Nothing could be further from the truth. A lot of what he says is really just common sense information worded as if it was profound. When reading the book I found myself getting annoyed constantly because of this.

If you are someone who is finding themselves slowly getting absorbed by the jujitsu world, and you are an avid reader, then get this book. If you are just casually training at your school for fun and fitness, don't bother. However, if you have been doing BJJ for more than a few months now, and want to "turbo charge" your learning, don't get this book. There is nothing particularly insightful about his approach to learning jujitsu. For the price you pay for this well marketed and overpriced book, you could actually get a book with substance and deep philosophical insights, like Saulo Ribeiro's and Kevin Howell's "Jiu-Jitsu University," or "Mastering Jujitsu" by Renzo Gracie and John Danaher.

An Epic Account of an American Tragedy

Fred Burton and Sam Katz are two of the nation's leading experts on radical Islamic terrorism. They've come together to unravel the tangled web of the attack in Benghazi in September 2012. In the process, they'e created a truly special book. At once inspiring, maddening, and ultimately, tragic, the book chronicles the ordeal of those brave Americans who faced the fires that day.

This book will rewrite the cloudy narrative of Benghazi once and for all. It is a must read for all Americans and anyone interested in understanding the implications the attack will have on the United States and its foreign relationships.

The Innocence of Muslims - YouTube video

This book is a real turn off. On page 35 they claim the whole episode was the result of an anti-Muslim YouTube video. That dog may have hunted for a week or two after the attack (promoted by the Obama administration) but has been totally refuted. Now a book with a copyright of 2013 that still regurgitates that crap, cannot be seriously considered as credible.

This fact-filled account of a very difficult episode in our diplomatic efforts in a very dangerous foreign field at a critical time in world events is just awesome. I appreciated all the background and supporting information that was presented. At once I am outraged, horrified and ashamed to learn the details surrounding the loss of life of courageous Americans doing what they were trained for and passionate about. The telling of their story brings them due honor and should convict and humble our country's leadership

There she led a life of unimaginable privilege and luxury alongside the king's own daughter. King Hassan II ascended the throne following Muhammad V's death, and in 1972 General Oufkir was found guilty of treason after staging a coup against the new regime, and was summarily executed. Immediately afterward, Malika, her mother, and her five siblings were arrested and imprisoned, despite having no prior knowledge of the coup attempt.

They were first held in an abandoned fort, where they ate moderately well and were allowed to keep some of their fine clothing and books. Conditions steadily deteriorated, and the family was eventually transferred to a remote desert prison, where they suffered a decade of solitary confinement, torture, starvation, and the complete absence of sunlight. Oufkir's horrifying descriptions of the conditions are mesmerizing, particularly when contrasted with her earlier life in the royal court, and many graphic images will long haunt readers. Finally, teetering on the edge of madness and aware that they had been left to die, Oufkir and her siblings managed to tunnel out using their bare hands and teaspoons, only to be caught days later. In 1961, Hassin II succeeded his father as king, and Oufkir's father was executed after staging a coup against the new regime. For the next 15 years, Oufkir, her mother, and her five siblings were confined to a desert prison and subjected to inhuman conditions. Oufkir's description of their day-to-day survival during these years is the heart of the book. The family finally escaped by digging a tunnel, were recaptured, and today live in Paris, where Oufkir eventually found love and marriage with a French architect. A best seller in France, this riveting story will find an audience here, but just how much of an audience is yet to be determined. Recommended for all general collections. Amazing story that deserves a better telling.

"Stolen Lives" needs to be evaluated on two different levels - the moving tale of a family imprisoned under the worst conditions for 20 years and the way this amazing story has been memorialized by Malika Oufkir and Michele Fitoussi. The subject is engrossing and important, but the book itself is not well-written. This accounts for the disparity in ratings that the book has received.
It is fascinating to read about Malika'a unique and frequently heartbreaking life. The eldest daughter of a Morococcan general, she was taken from her family and adopted by the King. Western readers will find the tales of her life in the royal household surprising and enlightening. Not only was the lifestyle outrageously lavish, it was also consisted of customs and traditions that are completely different from our own. Malika was allowed to return to her own family as a young teenager. She only had a few years to get to know her father and enjoy life outside the confines of the palace. Her father before General Oufkir was implicated in a coup attempt against the King and was assassinated. The rest of the family - Malika, her mother, her oldest brother, three young sisters and three year old baby brother were summarily imprisoned. For twenty years they lived in increasingly brutal and inhumane conditions, persecuted by the King for their father's crimes and forgotten by the world. Thanks to their uncommon courage and ingenuity, the family was able to survive and eventually escape. It's not easy to read about many of the horrors and indignities that were heaped upon the Oufkirs, but it's important that the world know about their story.
Unfortunately, the book is not worthy of this amazing story. It was written by Malika with the assistance of Michele Fitoussi. The first problem is that the book does not give sufficient background about either the history of Morrocco or General Oufkir's powerful role as one of the King's chief aides. Those unfamiliar with Moroccan history will frequently find themself at a loss for context. Second, given that this is Malika's first person account, it necessarily is a very one-sided version of history. Not that I doubt her version of events - I just would have preferred a more complete and well-researched book that included not only Malika's story but also those of her siblings. Malika frequently portrays herself as the backbone of the family, the strongest member who kept them all from succumbing to madness. This very likely is true, but it would have a much greater impact coming from someone else. Finally, the writing style is very repetitive and immature. While Michele Fitoussi is very sympathetic to Malika's story and deserves much credit for persuading her to tell her story, I have no doubt that a more objective and skilled writer would have improved the quality of the book immensely. Hopefully a serious scholar will undertake a complete telling of the Oufkir's story. I, for one, will be anxious to read it.

Great Book, Want More...

After reading all the previous reviews I don't have much to add to the fact that it is an excellent read. I watched the 60 Minutes interview of Malika Oufkir before I read the book and the name seemed very familiar to me. It took me a while to realize that I had read about General Oufkir's coup attempt in a semi-fictional novel : The Spy Wore Silk by The Countess of Romanones Aline. Since I feel a sense of unfinishedness among some of the reviewers, I would like to recommend the above book for people who would like a better idea of who General Oufkir was and just how big a betrayal of his king his coup attempt was. Of course this in no way justifies the imprisonment of his family. But I do think that the two books should be read together to get a better view of the context in which the incident took place, and an outsider's view of the Morocco of the time. The author of The Spy Wore Silk is an American married to a Spanish Count.

Now I have some idea of what it is like to go to hell and come back alive. Shattered, but alive. Malika Oufkir's autobiography, co-written with French journalist Michele Fitoussi, is extraordinarily candid for someone who has been in prison most of her life.
She and her family have experienced crushing, soul-suffocating oppression which has left severe, permanent damage on each member. While their lives have improved, to a certain extent they will all stay locked in time.
It is nothing short of a miracle, therefore, that someone who has been so repressed, can find the courage to reveal themselves with such frankness.
Stolen Lives is a truely unique story of the survival of the human spirit, a suspenseful fusion of fairytale, horror and thriller. It was one of those books I couldn't put down.
After I read the book several months ago, I interviewed Malika Oufkir for several stories I was writing about her. She wavers between fragility and toughness, she is both young and old, compassionate and passionate and displays great courage as well as great fear.
Malika has paid an unusually cruel and high price for her freedom of expression.
Before reading the book, it would benefit readers to do some background reading on events in Morocco which led to the incarceration of the Oufkir family. There are various sites on the Internet detailing the 1972 attempted coup d'etat by Malika's father, General Mohammed Oufkir. Also, reading on the structure of Moroccan society would be useful to understand what it was like to live under the iron-fisted rule of a feudal monarchy.

Great book! The best part is that it is not filled with a bunch of financial terms that don't make sense to non financial wizards like myself. This is a reality based book with examples and advice that can actually be used and implemented. It really is an absolute beginner's guide

It would be wrong for me to penalize this book based on what other reviews said about it. The title says what it is: An absolute beginner's guide. But I was disappointed, largely because other reviewers seemed to indicate this book goes deeper than it does.

I bought it hoping it would really explain and cover things like assigning fixed IP addresses and resolving conflicts that result in messages like "invalid IP" and such. It only barely touches on technical things -- in chapter 19 on "troubleshooting." And it punts by telling you to contact the manufacturer for more information if you have connection problems that aren't simply resolved by the very basic advice offered.

The rest reads like a grammar school introduction to all things electronic, for kids who've never seen a wireless anything or a cell phone or even the Internet or streaming videos. I mean, one chapter could be titled, "Wow, have you seen those new cell phone things? They're amazing! You can, like, drive places and keep talking and stuff!" Another could be titled, "Wow! How about that Internet thing! You can even watch movies on it!"

As far as technical information and setup advice, there is very little in this book that isn't already in the quick start guides included with most any device you might purchase. Just read those and you'll get 90 percent of what this book offers. You don't need to spend money on a book that basically tells you to run the installation wizard and follow the on screen prompts.

However if you really are a complete novice to Internet and electronic and wireless things -- an absolute beginner, just as the title describes -- then this just might be the book for you.

Not just for Beginners

We have had a wireless network for years. Usually there is not much to do, after it is up and running. Miller's book is up to date and basically gives you information about how to wirelessly connect everything in the house to the internet or to another gadget in the house. If a gadget has WiFi, you can run it from anywhere. He also includes information on "Sharing via Cloud". I am sure everybody, but experienced network techies can find something new and useful.

Excellent Primer on WireLess Technologies

I highly recommend this book....specifically for the uninitiated...a techy will more than likely find it boring...covers everything from home wifi networking, to Bluetooth cell phone hook-ups for your car...I learned quite a bit...money well spent...FYI, this book is an excellent read in Kindle format...not a lot of complex diagrams etc.,.jo'c
