I hate to complain. However ...

Back in 2005 when Leonard Maltin published the first edition of his "Classic Movie Guide", he noted in the foreward that it contained over 1,000 new reviews of pre-1960 films that had begun to show up on DVD and cable channels like Turner Classic Movies, Fox Movie Channel and (Encore) Westerns. He especially trumpeted the addition of many B Westerns, including the complete filmographies of Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and Hopalong Cassidy. Sure enough, glancing through the book, I noticed that it was heavily weighted toward the "sagebrush sagas" of the 1930's and 1940's, while missing some key "A" titles from the same decades. But Mr. Maltin promised that this fledgling effort would be freshened and updated in five years time; accordingly, I simply took him at his word, was grateful for the first edition, and began eagerly awaiting 2010 and the arrival of the second edition.

Well, it's here. But unfortunately, it definitely was not worth the wait. Sure it covers over 1,500 more films than the first edition - but according to Mr. Maltin himself, over 1,200 of the so-called "new" entries are the result of films from 1961 through 1965 being transferred to this book from his annual "Movie Guide". Just over 300 of the reviews in this second edition are genuinely new material that was previously unavailable elsewhere. Divided into five years, that only comes out to 5 fresh reviews a month - which is only a problem because there are dozens and dozens of older films resurfacing on DVD, cable, and the new DVD-R "manufactured on demand" programs like the Warner Archives, the MGM / Amazon exclusives, and the newly announced Universal MOD series. At best, this second incarnation of Maltin's "Classic Movie Guide" isn't keeping up with the market.

Among the missing are such titles as "The Locked Door", Barbara Stanwyck's first talkie which has been rotating fairly frequently on TCM's schedule; "The Ruling Voice", a fascinating Warner's crime drama starring Walter Huston and Loretta Young; early films currently available from The Warner Archives such as "The Flying Fleet", "Let Us Be Gay", and "Son of the Gods"; "The Perfect Clue", one of many "lost" films now found and available on DVD from companies like Alpha Video ... the casualty list goes on and on. Of course, not every title can or should be included in a reasonably sized and priced volume like the "Classic Movie Guide". But still, one is left to wonder ... are more readers going to be looking for information about "A Ship Comes In", for which Louise Dresser was nominated for the first Best Actress Oscar, and is not included - or for "Hear Me Good", a 1957 turkey that is included?

The bottom line - if you have the "Classic Movie Guide", first edition, think twice before you "upgrade". If you don't have a copy of the original, then go ahead and pick up the 2010 version. It's obviously not perfect, but depite its flaws, it's still the best mass market single-volume guide to the classics that's currently available. I give it **1/2 stars.

The Bassic Reference.

This is a great help when one wants to learn more about a film that is coming up on TV or when one had just seen it. It is very useful when one wants to identify an actor in a film one has seen. I still find some films I wish to know more about aren't listed, but this does cover a tremendous array of films, including some foreign classics.

Good but could be better

I like Maltin's review of classic movies so I can justify the cost of this compilation. Maltin's regular Movie Guide is half the cost and includes many of the classics. But if you are a classic film buff it's nice to have the classic addition handy. One improvement would be the addition of a couple of lines of trivia on the higher rated movies. Also, it would be nice if there were brief biography's on lead actors. With references to more complete information for those who are interested. Yes, I know space and expense are big factors but wouldn't it be nice to have this data in one large volume with the movie reviews. It would double your reading pleasure. I love old movies and often wonder about the lives of actors but never have a lot of time to do research on them. So it would be great to have a little more data in one volume or possibly publish Volume II with this information.

This book is a classic in the field

Pretty much the best book you'll find in the area of infrared system engineering. I just started learning about this field, and it gives a very clear and lucid introduction to this area. I was referred to this book by somebody who has been in the field for a long time and who still uses this book for reference. Though the technology is out-dated, the book is dominated by concepts and is relevant to those trying to understand the arcane field of IR.

Gold standard for the field

There's really nothing to say about this product. It is, and has been, the best book on the subject for forever.

My main concern is that it does spend a number of pages describing the use of slide rules for computation which are no longer produced. An updated version detailing a computer algorithm would be appreciated. It also seems a little lacking in the mathematical theory, devoting only one chapter to these details.

The fundamental difference between technology when the book was initially published and today is the revolution in computing technology, and the subsequent revolution in computer simulation and modeling. Accordingly, a future update should be revised to include more mathematical theory -- and more examples -- of use to software models.

But even with these weaknesses, IMO this is a "must-have" for anyone interested in this field.

The "classic" text, still relevant in 2014

I am a consultant and frequently need to get up to speed quickly on technical topics related to the projects I support. I asked a fellow optical systems designer what I should read to get smart on IR sensing systems and he simply said "the Hudson book." Well, this is that book; published in 1969, very little of it has become obsolete in that time. Yes, he talks about Radiation Calculator slide rules versus Matlab programs for numerically solving the equations of radiance, but the basic math is still the same. It's definitely the first book you'll reach for when you want a thorough introduction to all aspects of IR sensing systems. Just supplement it with some contemporary material on uncooled microbolometers and you're set.

Forget Regis Philbin's Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Martin Fridson's How to Be a Billionaire sets its sights much higher, and therefore seems an even more appropriate (if somewhat less realistic) goal for today's tycoon wannabes. There are some 200 individuals in the U.S. alone who now breathe this rarefied air, writes Merrill Lynch managing director Fridson, and no reason why those who adopt their philosophies cannot join them. To that end, he studied more than a dozen of the self-made super-rich, including Sam Walton, Bill Gates, Wayne Huizenga, and Warren Buffett. He then synthesized their techniques for success into nine strategies: take monumental risks, do business in new ways, dominate your market, consolidate an industry, buy low, thrive on deals, outmanage the competition, invest in political influence, and resist unions. Dividing profiles of these high fliers into chapters focused on their prevailing principles, he shows how each played a critical role in the growth of an empire. Walton didn't invent discounting, for example; he tweaked existing practices for the late-20th-century marketplace. Fridson (It Was a Very Good Year), managing director at Merrill Lynch and Co., presents a fascinating analysis of how well-known billionaires accumulated their wealth. He focuses on explaining the key strategies that lay listeners can use in building their own strong portfolios. Among the tycoons featured are Ross Perot, John D. Rockefeller, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and Sam Walton. Excellent, straight to the gut, realisitic and meaningful.

Great book of Martin Fridson, show us in a realistic and a objective way how many figures that we know became billionaries not millionaires is different. Take big risks but calculated risks, do it something different that permits outmanage the competition, always keep opening the back door. And having a deeply commitment with our self and our objective to become rich work hard, do things not just dream in things and excel in every thing you do are some points in the book. I strongly recommended it.

That's Right - Shoot for Billion with a "B"

This book, more than any other book on creating wealth, spells it out. If you want a get rich quick plan - sorry - this book is about the slow and steady! Can you say Tortoise and the Hare? Just like everyone else, I was taught to get a good education, get a job and live happily ever after until reaching retirement - get my gold watch and the company will take care of me. Hah! The truth is, the old ways don't work. The people who are profiled in this book were all successful in their own way.

I believe that if you model yourself after a successful person you will be successful. That's not new. What's new is to follow in the footsteps of one of these giants and success will be yours!

About the Author

James DeFilippis is an Assistant Professor in the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy. He received his PhD in Geography from Rutgers University in 2000, and his BA in Political Science and Geography from the University of Vermont in 1993. He is the author of Unmaking Goliath: Community Control in the Face of Global Capital (Routledge Press, 2004), which was named the "Best Book In Urban Politics, 2004" by the American Political Science Association. He has also published many articles and reports on housing, community development, urban politics, and local economic development.

Susan Saegert is Director of the Center for Human Environments (CHE) and Professor of Environmental Psychology at the CUNY Graduate Center, where she was also the first director of the Center for the Study of Women and Society. She received her PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1973 and her B.A. with honors in government from the University of Texas in 1968. Dr. Saegert has published five books including Social capital in poor communities with Phil Thompson and Mark Warren (Russell Sage, 2001), and From abandonment to hope: community households in Harlem , with Jackie Leavitt (Columbia University Press, 1990). She has also published over fifty articles and book chapters on environmental psychology, women and the environment, crowding, environmental stress, and housing and health, as well as social capital.

Must read for advanced novice and above

"Galen Rowell's Inner Game of Outdoor Photography" is a collection of articles written for Outdoor Photographer magazine organized into four broad categories. Interspersed between the articles are sections of photographs. Each article is cross-listed with relevant photographs, and vice-verse. This cross listing is an effective device; coming back to various photographs as I read the essays forced me to really think about them.
The first section deals with "creative and cognitive processes." These range from the inner desire needed to go out and get that shot to an almost scholarly examination - complete with annotated bibliography - of the processes involved in human sight and the differences between what people see and what film records. I found this section to be the strongest aspect of the book as well as the most useful and interesting.
The second section consists mainly of technical material ranging from how to pack your gear to ways to use flash in outdoor settings. It is pitched at a higher level than an introductory photo guide, suitable for an advanced novice like myself.
The third section is primarily a collection of travel stories, often only tangentially touching on photography. However, these articles provide the context in which many of the photographs in the book were taken. Arguably, context is the crux of photography. As Rowell points out, photographs are used to tell a story - though maybe not the one intended by the photographer.
The last section conveys Rowell's view on the positive and negative effects that photography and outdoor travel have on the natural environment, as well as on the art of color outdoor photography vis-�-vis fine art photography. These essays are thought provoking and, like the rest of the book, very well written.
I had feared from the title that I was in for a bunch of pseudo-spiritual babble, but instead I found a fairly deep, if meandering, discussion of the spectrum of what outdoor photography involves.

Not much of a "game", mostly "travel log"

I read some of the reviews about this book present on this site and was somewhat surprised to see mostly positive ones. Maybe it is just my perception or the expectation I had after reading these reviews but before buying the book that lead to my disappointment in the book. What were my expectations...? I did expect Galen to tell me what he thinks and feels before, during, and after taking those great pictures. I did NOT expect a HOW-TO book (which it is definitely not). I expected a book about artistic approach to the outdoor photography. What I found instead was mostly a travel log. The first 2 chapters were as close to my expectation as it ever got. The author talked some about his creative approach and very little about his technical one. The rest of the book doesn't even present his "photographic philosophy". He simply talks about his travels, places he visited, people he met. All that would be great for an illustrated travel book but not for a book that was supposed to tell me about how HE came to those pictures, what (in his opinion) made those pictures great or standing out (there is some of it but so little it almost doesn't exist). The book's title has "inner game" words in it. I wanted to know what that "inner" game was before, during, and after taking EACH picture (or at least most of them). Overall - disappointing and expensive for that.

The "Inner Passion" of Galen Rowell

If you're a serious photographer (amateur or pro) and find your interest in shooting lagging occasionally, Rowell's enthusiasm might be contagiousness enough to provide a cure. This man was passionate about photography and went to extraordinary ends to get the shots he visualized. The majority of the book deals with his philosophy of photography and how he accomplished what he did. There's also much excellent technical advice. The book's only shortcoming, from my very personal perspective (take it for what it's worth), is the undercurrent of Rowell's ample ego. Were the personal pronoun "I" deleted from the book, its page count would be reduced considerably. Nonetheless, I still strongly recommend "Inner Game" for the highly passionate and very personal account that it is - an extraordinary photographer's testimonial to a life totally devoted to the art of photography and love of nature. It makes you want to climb a mountain and take pictures!
