Required reading for internal change agents

This book is spectacularly useful for internal change agents. The "ten commandments" are must. @1: come to work each day, prepared to be fired. This is the book that puts a label (intrapreneur) on the many change agents in all types of organizational settings. If you are a change agent, operating from withIN an organization, this is required reading for you.

I read this book when I used to work for Du Pont de Nemours and Gifford Pinchot was the talk of the town. However, the book continues to be up to date. You see, as the years go by, there is a growing need for innovation due to budget cuts.
As a Master Trainer for the UN Entrepreneurship Training Program, I can vouch for the importance of intra-corporate entrepreneurship to help the corporation to grow. The point is, having ideas is not the problem, but implementation of the idea is. The intrapreneur fills the gap between the idea generation process and a successful running of a business. Intrapreneur is who gets the sponsors and normally puts together a winning team to make things happen. If you're serious about never getting a job in which you won't be able to make a real difference, read this book

The Good Earth is one of the most famous novels of all time. It won for the author both the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize for Literature. It was the best selling fiction work in 1931 and 1932. Buck lived most of her life in China up until to the time she wrote this book. When Nixon went to China to visit Chairman Mao in 1972, Peal Buck wanted to go along too as translator. She was heartbroken when Mao's wife denounced Pearl Buck as an “American cultural imperialist". Mao whom Pearl Buck had initially supported would not allow her to visit. This book that Pearl Buck wrote had been banned in China and nobody had read or was allowed to read this book.

About the Author
Pearl S. Buck lived most of her life in China up until to the time she wrote this book. She was born on June 26, 1892 as Pearl Sydenstricker in Hillsboro, West Virginia. Her parents were religious missionaries with the Southern Presbyterian Church. They had lived in China since 1880. They already had several children who had died in infancy in China. They were fortunate in that they came to America just before giving birth to Pearl. They returned to China with Pearl when she was only three months old. Pearl lived in China for the next 40 years, except to attend college. She was fourth of seven children, but only one of three to survive to adulthood. She attended Randolph Macon Women's College in Lynchburg Virginia for four years. In 1917 she married John Lossing Buck, an agricultural economist living in China. They lived in a rural province which became the inspiration for The Good Earth. The couple had a baby in 1921 which was born with PKU and was profoundly retarded. Pearl had a hysterectomy when a tumor was found during the delivery and thus could not have any more children. They adopted a child and taught at Nanking University. Pearl found she could get paid for writing and began writing for a living. She was published in The Nation, Atlantic Monthly and other publications. Her first novel was East Wind, West Wind. After The Good Earth, she never had another big hit but there was always a market for her books. Pearl Buck died on March 6, 1973 at age 80.

COMPLEX...COMPELLING...CLASSIC...

This 1932 Pulitzer Prize winning novel is still a standout today. Deceptive in its simplicity, it is a story built around a flawed human being and a teetering socio-economic system, as well as one that is layered with profound themes. The cadence of the author's writing is also of note, as it rhythmically lends itself to the telling of the story, giving it a very distinct voice. No doubt the author's writing style was influenced by her own immersion in Chinese culture, as she grew up and lived in China, the daughter of missionaries.

This is the story of the cyclical nature of life, of the passions and desires that motivate a human being, of good and evil, and of the desire to survive and thrive against great odds. It begins with the story of an illiterate, poor, peasant farmer, Wang Lung, who ventures from the rural countryside and goes to town to the great house of Hwang to obtain a bride from those among the rank of slave. There, he is given the slave O-lan as his bride.

Selfless, hardworking, and a bearer of sons, the plain-faced O-lan supports Wang Lung's veneration of the land and his desire to acquire more land. She stays with him through thick and thin, through famine and very lean times, working alongside him on the land, making great sacrifices, and raising his children. As a family, they weather the tumultuousness of pre-revolutionary China in the 1920s, only to find themselves the recipient of riches beyond their dreams. At the first opportunity, they buy land from the great house of Hwang, whose expenses appear to be exceeding their income.

With the passing of time, Wang Lung buys more and more land from the house of Hwang, until he owns it all, as his veneration of the land is always paramount. With O-lan at this side, his family continues to prosper. His life becomes more complicated, however, the richer he gets. Wang Lung then commits a life-changing act that pierces O-lan's heart in the most profoundly heartbreaking way.

As the years pass, his sons become educated and literate, and the family continues to prosper. With the great house of Hwang on the skids, an opportunity to buy their house, the very same house from where he had fetched O-lan many years ago, becomes available. Pressed upon to buy that house by his sons, who do not share Wang Lung's veneration for the land and rural life, he buys the house. The country mice now have become city mice.

This is a potent, thematically complex story, brimming with irony, yet simply told against a framework of mounting social change. It is a story that stands as a parable in many ways and is one that certainly should be read. It illustrates the timeless dichotomy between the young and the old, the old and the new, and the rich and the poor. It is no wonder that this beautifully written book won a Pulitzer Prize and is considered a classic masterpiece. Bravo!

An outstanding novel

This novel won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1932. The author later won the Nobel Prize in literature. It is a story that sticks in your mind long after you have read the novel.
The setting for the story is in China at an indefinite time, perhaps circa 1930. An illiterate farmer buys himself a wife and has several children before being forced off the land by a drought. When a mob storms a wealthy man's house, the farmer's wife finds a cache of jewels which they steal. Jewels can be traded for money and land, and the farmer becomes rich, educating his sons and rising above his previous station.
Wealth leads to decadence, and he eventually becomes one of the wealthy individuals that he previously envied, supplanting a family who had previously decayed. What goes around, comes around.

Fascinating enough for adults, gross enough for kids!

My soon-to-be 8 year old daughter has a bit of a macabre streak -- she saw this book at the mall and immediately put it on her birthday list. The rest of the family thought it a bit odd, but this IS the same girl that carries around a skeleton doll for the entire month of October...

'How They Croaked' goes further than just describing the "How" of the way some famous folks' lives ended -- there's also quite a bit of insight into some of the other medical issues they fought. And it doesn't just end at death... the book also reveals some surprising stories about missing body parts, thievery, etc. I learned quite a bit having it read aloud from the backseat during a roadtrip! Note: The book doesn't mince words when it comes to slicing, dicing and decomposing, so you can also expect this to lead to more conversations about anatomy, etc. Heed the notice at the beginning that says "If you don't have the guts for gore, do not read this book."

The publisher listed the book as appropriate for ages 10 to 14, but even at 8, my daughter was okay with it. YMMV. You'll definitely get used to hearing "Ewwwwww! Hey, did you know __________?"

Interesting for both Kids and Adults

The subtitle says it all: The Awful Ends of the Awfully Famous. Some the awfully famous whose ends Georgia Bragg tells her readers about are King Tut, Albert Einstein, Galileo, Charles Dickens, Marie Curie, and James Garfield, among others.

Bragg spares no detail in telling us how the people she chose to be included in her book died.

In addition to the details of their deaths, Bragg also includes other interesting tidbits of history. For instance, after telling us about George Washington's strange end, she adds a section on Presidential Death Facts. She provides the readers information on the presidents whose faces appears on US money, from Washington to U.S. Grant, and the presidents who died in office, etc.

Adults may find the descriptions too detailed, but the age group that the book is written for, will love every little detail. It may be hard for adults to read the book to their kids, but the kids are going to love the book.

The bottom line is that both adults and kids will love this book. It is a given that the kids will want to share the facts they learn and the book itself. Adults will find themselves wanting to share the facts as well. The problem for the parents is that their kids won't let them borrow their book.

My 11 year old son really liked this book

I bought this for my son the summer after 5th grade when he was 11 (it was one of the options for him to pick from a required reading list for 6th grade). He's a slow reader so he doesn't enjoy reading much, but he liked this book. The great thing about this book is that it's made up of many short stories rather than long chapters.
The stories are very brief summaries of the lives and deaths of famous people like King Tut, Henry VIII, Christopher Columbus, Albert Einstein, and Edgar Allan Poe. There's a total of 19 famous people listed in the Table of Contents.
This book was easy for my son to read without feeling overwhelmed because each mini story is only about 5-7 pages.
Plus I enjoyed the facts he shared with me each time he read about someone.
I have friends whose 10-11 year olds are reading the Twilight series of books. My son would have a panic attack if he had to read a 500+ page book. Granted, he'll eventually need to get used to the idea of reading big books as school progresses, but for now this is good for him.

Risking All to Heal

This story is the start of a serial and does end in a cliff hanger so be warned. This is the start of Kierra's journey to healing of her mind and spirit as she has never really recovered from a vicious attack. The timing seems to be right for Chandler to step in and in days accomplish so much for her. But we see her struggle to keep things in "professional" manner and not let her heart engage but we also see a glimpse that things might not be so cut and dried for Chandler either as she is very different from his usually partners. I'll be honest abrupt cliff-hanger endings are usually a turn off but because this story is so rich and engaging I can't wait for the next installment. This is not a short part of a book but a full book that truly is a complete 1st step in these people's lives. I truly feel invested in the characters.

I'm not normally a fan of "naughty" books but this one pulled me into the story line! I couldn't put it down. I was shocked by the end which irritates me only because now I have to wait for the second book to come out, so hurry up! I must admit I'm secretly hoping for a little bit more from Keira and Daniel I am a fan for sure and would recommend this book to anyone and everyone

The Miracle of Cardboard is Available for Everyone!

The sheet music as far as the arrangement is good BUT the shipping was horrible. Most sheet music distributors include cardboard in the shipping materials so the product won't be damaged. This company (Swanson) did not have any protective materials in the packaging. My music arrived crumpled and with deep creases in it that I cannot get out. I wouldn't be surprised it they said they drove over it with a car and then stuffed it in between the cushions of a couch and their dog dug it back out of the couch before it was sent to me. My advice, a simple piece of cardboard would delivery a good quality product and raise your star rating.
